BURBANK, Calif. (AP) - The Walt Disney Co. pledged Wednesday to contribute $2 million to restore burned areas and help victims of the Southern California wildfires, while Bank of America pledged $1 million in aid.
Starting Thursday, Disney said it would provide $200,000 in donations to the American Red Cross for immediate relief efforts.
The rest of the money would be distributed later on a case-by-case basis to groups for rebuilding and restoration efforts, which might include replanting trees or replacing burned parks and community centers.
Disney also planned to distribute packages of toys and books for children who have been displaced by the fire and said it would send Disney characters to shelters this week to cheer up youngsters.
Meanwhile, the Bank of America Charitable Foundation announced it would provide $500,000 to the American Red Cross for immediate disaster relief efforts. Another $500,000 will be given to local nonprofit groups to deal with specific needs in their areas, the bank said in a statement.
