Disney Animation opening studio in Vancouver

Pixar closed its Vancouver studio some years back. Which seems a bit short-sighted in a Disney+ World. Yes, that studio was never going to make features, but it's too bad. Nice to see Disney Animation at least show up.

We visited it in 2013 and there were some glimpses of projects that were quite unique and never to see the light of day unfortunately.

Rumor confirmed!!

I think they think What If is going to do real well and would like to emulate the success of Into the Spider-Verse.

Disney could have used blue sky rather than close it down and open another studio. I feel sorry for the staff laid off last year

Cheap Labor??? Have...have you ever been to Vancouver? Are you aware of how Canada works?
Outside Titmouse's branch there, there's no animation union in Vancouver and most outsourcing is done to circumvent the Animators Guild and high wages in SoCal. What's worse, some productions there have been known for having put animators through hell due to lack of union protections (Sausage Party).

Hmmm... I am not aware that Vancouver would be cheaper than South Korea or Japan, places notorious for underpaying animators. I do think BC gives generous tax breaks, but I believe the main reason for Vancouver is its high talent pool for animation/game development, and it is not primarily a wages issue (according to the article link, Burbank is expanding anyway). Vancouver has a high standard of living, and wages have to remain competitive to attract the talent there with their multitude of choices (just off the top of my head, Sony Imageworks and Bardel are in Vancouver).
