When I was on the monerail, around 9:30 sunday morning, I saw a boat docked and lots of lights on at Discovery Island. Does anyone know why they would be there?

They probably need to go check out the island every now and then just to make sure that it isn't falling apart. Who knows though...they could have been looking at the area for future development (we can only hope).

In my 1995 planning video there is something about discovery island, but i've never heard much about it except that it has animals on it and stuff.

Actually management and imagineers make frequent trips to the island to take pictures, work on sketches, and get a feel for the place. There are plans in the works, for what or when, who knows.

Fun fact... did you know that a family actually lived on that island? Before Disney bought the property there was a family who called DI home.

That's interesting. Do you know where I can find more information on this family?

when i was about seven we were on a boat heading for fort wilderness when a horrible storm came upon us. the capt of the boat decided to stow us away on discovery island for safety. it was a truly scary experience. i never went back to the island after that. not sure why i am sharing this but, there is my discovery island story.

How is that possible? The lake itself as well as the island were built by Disney.

So if the island did not exist before Disney bought it, how could a family live there?
BUSTED!!!!!!!!!!! Hey!! That is true. Disney built the seven seas lagoon. I don't know where they gave that kid his info but they gave it to him wrong. heh//

What will people come up with next? A yeti inside the Matternhorn? Crazy talk...

It's hard not to beat spending half a day for the low admission at Discovery Island compared with spending half a day at Animal Kingdom for a higher price. Sure you also snag Dinosaur and Kilimanjaro Safaris, as well as an awesome meal ticket, but what else is there to do? I've never spent a full day in the park and dare not to touch it unless it's October-January! Way too humid, no shade, and Kali Rapids does not quench one's thirst. I'd drive down to Tampa before I spent a hot day at AK.

In other words, DOOP, AK competed with Discovery Island, that's why it was shut down.

Actually, Disney did build the Seven Seas Lagoon, however, Discovery Island is in Bay Lake. Bay Lake and Discovery Island were both there long before Disney. As far as the story of a family living there, I have heard that before myself but don't know how true it is, but it is possible that it is true.

Where did you hear about the family on discovery island? I take it back then since I had forgotten that disney build the seas only, not the small island.

The company has been considering several ideas for the Island. There is still infrastructure there and regular maintenance is performed. There was one idea for honeymoon cottages on the island. Also, Reedy Creek is always out monitoring property, so it may very well have been some RC guys checking water samples.

Interesting Island, never been on it, would love to, but have not. Plans for the Island could be bug, but i don't know if they would get to big due to the fact that the island is a bird sancuatary. hmmm...Interesting. It is on Bay Lake, so it's a natural Island, Seven Seas Lagoon is man-made. That's what i know, never heard anything about a family on it.

Ok, I just did a search and some confusion was clarified to me. I have construction photos of Bay Lake but I just found out that the whole lake was drained when Disney bought the property. This was done to clean out the lake and I also found that the white sand used for the beaches at all the resorts came from the bottom of Bay Lake.

I have yet to find info about the family but you are right about Bay Lake.

Bay Lake and Discovery Island were there before Disney purchased the land. It was part of the property that appealed to Walt the most. The lagoon is man made, the lake is natural.

I had also heard of a family that lived there so I did a little research and found this......

Discovery Island was originally called Treasure Island. The island in Disney's Bay Lake, near the River Country water park, was named Raz Island from 1900 to 1937, after a family that lived there. The island also was the home of Florida's first radio disc jockey, Radio Nick, in the late 1930s, according to "Since The World Began," a history of Walt Disney World. Disney bought the island, which was a hunting retreat at the time, in 1965. When opened as Treasure Island, it was Disney World's second attraction, following the 1971 opening of the Magic Kingdom.
