Discovery Island

I didn't see a thread for this, but WDWMagic's favorite, Jim Hill, has a new article up about what may be happening at Discovery Island.

http://jimhillmedia.com/blogs/jim_hill/archive/2008/06/06/will-pirates-soon-be-returning-to-treasure-er-discovery-island.aspx

I'm sure this will probably end up with all the other POTC-related projects that he talks about, but I still thought this was interesting food for thought. I probably wouldn't be all that enthused for a POTC overlay on Discovery Island (which I never got the chance to visit before it closed). This part, on the other hand, got me ridiculously excited:

"There's also been some pretty serious talk of turning this remote corner of Disney World into an elaborate interactive gaming environment. Some place that would allow tourists to explore the worlds of 'Myst' or ABC's 'Lost.'"

As the first half of my user name hints, I would freak out if I could go to "The Island" from Lost. I would have to go back! That would be a day worth having. I know that Myst rumor has been floating around forever too.

I wouldn't doubt Disney has always been throwing around ideas of what to do with that area. I could see how it would be used for more of a special event like a corporate outing because that island isn't really convenient for the average guest.

Even though everyone makes fun of him, JH writes some of the best random Disney trivia articles.

Myst island would have been awesome in the early 90s, but something like that today would be as silly as opening an attraction based on a TV show that's losing popularity...

...oh wait, that's happening. ;)

Jim Hill posted this exact same information almost a year ago. It may even be the exact same article, to be honest with you.

Discovery Island is probably the best place for something like this because it's relatively hard to get to and secluded, not too small but not huge, and the land is stable and could be changed easily.

Night Kingdom?

Nope... Night Kingdom will have it's own infrastructure.

Thus:

own infrastructure=Discovery Island???

Plus, if they are planning for a more Adventure theme for guests to flow through a ropes course type of journey for their visit, sounds like a great place.

I do agree that it would be great to re-use Discovery Island for Night Kingdom, there isn't enough infrastructure to support the amount of animals that I am hearing Night Kingdom will utilize. The island just isn't big enough.

All it really had was an aviary and a bunch of trails. It's a surprisingly small place.

It's kinda sad seeing the broken and warn nets there now. Reminds me of the aviary from Jurassic Park III.

While I agree that the Lost concept is great (do I know you from the LJ Lost community?) I really doubt we would see that happen. Lost is on it's way out and while it is popular, I don't think it's popular enough. It has become sort of a cult thing (not saying that's bad, I LOVE it) and I don't think it would attract enough of the average tourist to sustain itself. It's always nice to dream though, eh?

They could always make misbehaving children be on button duty in the hatch :lookaroun

It's no Harry Potter, but it is stronger than going by the house used for Golden Girls. So, I could see use for the LOST franchise, but not this big of use.

I agree. Something Lost related but not on this scale. Though I do think if they were going to do it, it would've been done by now. Then again I've been wondering why they've had the Muppets for so long and very little has been done with them...that's for another rant errr thread :brick:

I agree this is probably too big a scale for something Lost-related (but a boy can dream!), although I think the Lost fanbase will probably outlast the show (and they had no problem making an American Idol themed show). Certainly, the Myst idea shows how quickly something like this could have become dated. I think something in this vein as a 5th gate would be an interesting answer to the Aquatica park without being too similar to that idea.

And I apologize if there was another thread about this, I looked and didn't see one, but I may have missed it.

Okay, being the POTC fan that I am - I probably would pay some bucks to go experience it. I mean, can't you see some great pirate feast similar to the Hoop De Do Revue out there? Oh Man, oh man, to dream a little dream. :ROFLOL:

So that's the secret of LOST? They're at Disney World!
