Dining Plan & Signature Restaurants w/ Kids Question?

We are booked at the Brown Derby, and are on the Disney Dining Plan. I understand this requires 2 table service credits. My question, my DS is almost 5 so yes, we have a the dining plan for him. He only eats the basic kids menu stuff like mac cheese, pizza, grilled cheese, etc. Will they also require 2 credits for his meal since the kids menu items are the same price as any of the other standard restaurants? If so, I am thinking it might make more sense just to pay for his, and save the credit for one of the other meals I was going to pay for. Thoughts?

A Signature Restaurant requires 2 credits for all diners ages 3 and up.

It may be better to pay out of pocket for him.
