Digital Camera Question

My granddaughter is turning 10 at the end of January. She's an ap holder and very experienced disney vet. She loves to use my digital camera to take pics at disney, I have a sony cyber shot that's 2 or 3 years old but I want to get her her own for her birthday. Any suggestions on one that's easy to use, doesn't have a long lag in the time when shooting a pic?

In the $200 range, a Canon S110. Nothing else will beat it at that price point, especially from an image quality perspective.
In a DSLR, for ~$450, a brand new Canon T3i with a kit lens. Cheaper might be had with refurbs from Canon.
In between would be a Canon G15 for ~$350. Can be a serious photography tool. But not as slick as the 110.

For those prices, doubtful you will find a better camera overall. For a 10y.o., I would say the 110. She can actually learn photography with it (has all the modes you need), does great video, and won't break the bank. I'm not sure how many pre-teens will really want to lug around a DSLR.

Until you get into the $1k range, digital will have lag, some more or less than others. No lag means film. If it's really about learning how to craft great images, I would say a Pentax K1000 and a 50mm if we're talking under ~$100.

BTW, if you do need to stay around $100, the Canon SX160. In black. Will still have IS and all the modes, just a small sensor.

Side note:

Agreed that B&H is awesome, however you should also check amazon. Depending on where you live, you may be able to get it without having sales tax (see below), which adds up. And they have one of the best return policies I have ever personally dealt with. Pair that with if you have Amazon Prime (thus you can get the camera a LOT faster), and it scores points all around.

Currently the only states that charge sales tax for items sold by Amazon or its subsidiaries are:

  • Arizona
  • California
  • Connecticut
  • Georgia
  • Kansas
  • Kentucky
  • Massachusetts
  • New Jersey
  • New York
  • North Dakota
  • Pennsylvania
  • Texas
  • Virginia
  • Washington
  • West Virginia
  • Wisconsin
Florida is soon :(

OK. Look at this one http://www.bhphotovideo.com/bnh/controller/home?O=&sku=889962&Q=&is=REG&A=details for the S110.

B&H is very reputable and has a great return policy. Seems all the $199 deals disappeared after Christmas. But this is a pretty darn good price. You just have to buy by 12/31.

Oh, other cool features include a touch LCD and built in WiFi.

Yes, another +1 for BH.... used a 1600 dollar camera for two weeks, about 900 photo's and decided it wasn't for me and they refunded 100%. They have an amazing 30 day return policy.

After mentioning to my wife, she also suggested I amend my statement. Considering kids do tend to be more active than adults and do some odd things at times, a more rugged camera may be better.

For $229, again at B&H, go for the Panasonic DMC-TS5 (or the TS3). This is a ruggedized P&S unit. You can drop it on the floor from 6 feet up and it'll still work. You can take it 40 FEET underwater and it will still work. Has built-in GPS.

When I go to Hawaii and go snorkeling, this is the camera that goes into the water with me. She can take it in the pool and shoot pictures all day long. Heck, she can stand in the middle of Main Street in the normal summer afternoon downpour and take shots. Or maybe Splash Mountain. Shoots HD video too.

Just a thought.
