did you bring a lot of toys for your toddler?

If you flew (and had to deal with bag restrictions etc), did you bring a lot of toys for your 2 or 3 year old? Did they get used? I figure even if we don't go to the parks EVERY day, we will still be busy doing something every day so how much time do the kids actually have to play in the hotel room? We will be staying off-site in September in a timeshare. So yes, we will have space for running around, access to a pool, etc, and 3 tvs to use.. but how much STUFF do I have to bring? Do I bring all 6-8 of her favorite dolls? 6 story books for bedtime, and a bunch of toys? Or do I figure we'll pick up souvenirs and other goodies along the way, plus she'll be too exhausted (even with naps) to really want to do much anyway? If you do bring stuff, what do you bring? Or did you just hit Walmart or Target while you were there and then leave the stuff behind? (yeah right!)

It's been quite a few years, but no we did not. We brought a snack, a drink and a book and a small toy - something that did not make noise.
They were good for about 30 minutes and then they fell asleep and woke up when we landed.

My daughter turns 5 next month and my son turns 3 in a few weeks. They have been to WDW 5 times. We let them each choose ONE "friend" (doll, stuffed animal, etc) to bring to sleep with. As for the plane.... a portable DVD player can be your best friend. I saw so many families with huge carryons with crayons, stickers, games, etc., and it seemed to be a big hassle to be constantly taking things out, putting them back, kids dropping the toys, etc. The flight from MA is short enough that a movie will get them through it fine.

IMO, 6-8 dolls/toys/books is WAY too much stuff to be lugging down there. (but then again, we travel very light!) Have a great trip!

Well to clarify, I wasn't talking about the flight. I was talking about for the actual duration of the vacation. On the flight, yes I understand 1 baby, 1 snack, 1 toy or book or whatever... but what about for the week that we are there? Should I be packing more in her suitcase?

The first time we ever flew with our kids (they were ages 12 months and four years), I took WAY too much stuff to entertain them on the plane. Now I only take a few small items.

Both kids always bring one stuffed animal on the plane, and in my carry on I take a travel sized Magna Doodle for each of them, a small book for my youngest and some sort of book or activity book (like a sticker book) for my oldest. Most of these things actually never leave my carry on....I have them "just in case".

But my secret weapon for my youngest is an envelope full of sticker sheets. I also pack some sort of special snack for each of them...something that they normally do not eat. For us, it is Rainbow Goldfish....the color of those things freak me out, so it is not something we usually give our kids unless we are on a plane!

We also a very tiny travel sized DVD player that we take on the plane which has been the most helpful thing in keeping both kids entertained when they get restless.

As far as toys in the hotel room, I do not take anything other than what I had in my carry on, and they rarely even play with those items in the hotel room.

On our first day we always let each of them pick out a small toy from the resort gift shop, and that is what they both end up playing with in the hotel room, if anything.

EDIT: Sorry, I just saw your post saying you were not talking about the flight, only the hotel room. Both my kids have never been interested in playing with any toys in the room other than what we buy them in the resort gift shop.

Same here!

My daughter has a really small pink care bears suitcase and I tell the kids they can bring as many toys as they want, so long as they all fit in the suitcase. And then they use the suitcase as a toy box for the week.

No, we never brought anything because they always got one special something each visit (usually plush) and they still do, but now it's more along the lines of a piece of jewelry or clothing.

We used to do the same thing. They each had a small backpack and could bring whatever they wanted to put in the backpack. We always drove when the kids were younger, so we had a "snack box" for the back seat for them with things they didn't usually get at home. The rule was they could have anything from it as long as they asked first. They were really good about it.
I also used to wrap up a few little "gifts" for them for the road, so when they'd get restless, or when they deserved an award, I'd give them a little gift (stickers, cards, etc)

My daughter's first trip was this past April (she was 20 months old) and we brought 3 of her favorite stuffed animals with us. (Beanie baby size.) She had one that she would keep with her during the day and the other 2 stayed back in our room in her crib/pack and play for sleeping with. I packed a few of her favorite books but I knew we would be buying her everything in sight so I really kept it light on the stuff that we brought for her!
Everyday we would come back to the resort for a swim and a rest and she would play with whatever we bought for her that day for a little while before she would crash! :animwink:

If you are bringing a DVD player, make sure you have a headset for it. Continental does not allow you to play it with sound unless you have a headset.

For the plane - I usually bring some "new" type of Crayola items. Something I know she will like, but hasn't seen. As well as some little things from home that I know she likes - but not much.

For the hotel, we buy one toy (very small) in the part that day, and when she gets up the next morning, it's left on her bed from Tink. This gives her something to do while we shower and get ready. Then at the end of the day, she has something to play with (in addition to what is already in suitcase from the plane). Kind of fun - as when she wakes up she gets all excited before she even knows what she got!

We are taking the autotrain down to Disney next month and I was really worried about keeping my 4 kids entertained for the 17 hour trip. Now mind you a good part of that the kids will be sleeping but still I had to think of some ways to entertain. I bought backpacks for the 3 younger ones from the Disney Store a while back and have been buying little Disney things here and there to fill their bags. Most of the stuff came from the clearance section in the Disney Store or the dollar store so I didn't pay alot of money for anything and they will have plenty to keep them busy the trip down and back and stuff to do while we are at our house after our days at the park. And also if anything breaks or gets lost I won't stress because it didn't cost a bundle. I am not bringing any other toys besides what's in the bags. The dvd player is also a must when traveling with kids, we've got 2 to try to fend off any arguements between kids that don't want to watch the same movie. For my oldest who will be turning 13 on our trip, we got him a PSP (Playstation portable) and a couple games for his birthday which we will let him open on the way down. With that and his DS he'll be kept busy.

My boys are 4 1/2 and 17 months on our trip in 2 weeks. I have limited them on toys. Mainly because I know we'll be buying some down there. 4yo is bringing nintendo ds with a couple of games and a couple of little transformers. The baby is going to bring a few "little people" 2 books and 2 stuffed animals (small ones), 1 for the room and 1 for while we are out.

We just bring stuff for the plane, a few pool toys and he can bring one other toy from home as he knows he will get to pick out a few toys while there.

Well, I guess that I am an over planner. We are leaving in about a month and I have been slowly going through and removing the Disney toys that he already has. I am desperately trying to save a little money there. I have also pulled out some Disney books to go with us. Anyway, I have heard that the housekeeping staff at the resorts will put the stuffed animals in the window or watching TV or whatever so I am going to have my husband leave out an additional one each day so that my son thinks that he is getting little presents from Mickey during the trip (after all this trip is for his birthday.) I have also been buying stuff from our local Disney store outlet with the same idea.

That said- we are going to be in FL for two weeks and only one will be spent at the parks so I probably do need more toys and such. To me- I would rather have things that never had to be unpacked than have nights or -God forbid- mornings where I have to deal with a bored toddler!

Also note- I am not taking anything too big or noisy!
