Diabetic "no sugar" sweets and snacks?

Hi all,

I was reminded of this by reading the thread about favorite snacks. I have a family member who can't eat sugar, but who loves the occasional "non sugar" sweet snack - any of you who are diabetics will know what I mean - stuff like snacks and desserts sweetened with Aspartame or fructose.

To get to the point - do any of you know where these kinds of snacks might be had in WDW? E.g. at counter-service restaurants or from street vendors? Thanks!

There is a sugar free brownie on the menu at Cosmic Ray's.

I have read, but don't know from experience, that sugar free ice cream is available. However, you may have to wait for them to bring it in from another location.

If you have plans for a sit-down restaurant, let them know you have a diabetic in your party and they can make a special dessert.

Many people recommend Sci-Fi or 50's Prime Time for dessert rather than a meal. You probably could get something sugar free without advance notice--but it would stand to reason that if they knew you were coming, they'd make something awesome.

At www.wdwig.com they have some helpful tips for all kinds of dietary needs. First go to the dining section then there is a column on the Left side scroll down til you get to the SPecial Dietary Needs part then click on Other Special Diets. They have sugar free diet tips, Fat free/low fat diet tips, and other special diet tips! Hope this helps!

Please be careful..."No Sugar" does not mean no carbs. If you are counting carbs to control bloodsugar these must be factored in. I've found everyone to be very helpful if you ask. When they don't know they can usually find out for you. I usually "share" with someone so I can have a taste, but not blow my carb count and send my bloodsugar out of whack. If they are not insulin dependant then you have a little more room to move things around. Cut carbs at the meal and have a snack. I usually carry stuff in my backpack to keep me going thru the day.

In the Marketplace, Ghiardelli's has a sugar free ice cream and the Gourmet Mickey shop had a sugar free apple pie last week. Sadly though, Gourmet Mickey will be closing soon to make way for a new sandwich shop.

I think you have your terms mixed up. Fructose is refined sugar, pure and simple.

I dont know if this will help any but if u see ANYTHING made with Splenda its good, Splenda is a sweetener made from REAL SUGAR but something was done to it so its reversed so it wont screwup your blood sugar. Diet rite soda uses it. PLUS!! Blue bunny ice cream bars! I saw them there once, I think they have the splenda on them!

I know, being diabetic myself, I learned very quickly that no sugar and no sugar added can be very misleading when carbs are involved.

Thanks

Thanks for all of your help.

A couple o' quick notes: the problem we have in my fambly is sugar intolerance, not diabetes - but since diabetic foods are OK, I thought it would be easier to take this angle.

Just to set the record straight on fructose - I had to look this one up since I am after all only a soft drink and not a real doctor:

Fructose
A type of sugar found in corn syrup, honey, fruit juices, etc. Fructose has a lower glycemic index than regular sugar, so it causes less insulin to be released.

Cheers!

That "definition" is from drumlib.com (and it is mostly incorrect). Next time please cite a reputable and recognized source. If you really need help in this matter then fructose will be your worst enemy. Now the record is set straight.

Fructose is a sugar. It is natural and while it has a lower glycemic rating still causes an insulin response. If a sugar intolerance is what they have they should stay with the artificial sweetners.(But of course, everyone is different.)

Splenda...the newest on is made from real sugar (just like lil mermaid said). It has been treated to scramble the molecules. It tastes like sugar with no aftertaste and does not cause a rise in insulin. It can be used for cooking, baking, etc. and is starting to be used more frequently in commercial products.

Noticed on our trip this past May 16 thru 26 that the Ice Cream vendors now had the Strawberry Mini Bars that were Sugar Free. I have always loved the Strawberry Bars, but had noticed to me that they were very sweet and tried one of the Sugar Free ones.

It wasn't anywhere as good as the regular and I honestly think that the reason was that it seemed like it had been in the freezer for months. It had a great amount of frost on it.

Don't think many people know they have them may be the reason.

My mom is diabetic, and she was frustrated that many of the ice cream shops did not have sugar free. I know that they did have it at the food court in the Land.

Also, there were sugar-free brownies on the buffet at Chef Mickey's that she said were excellent. (I know that's not counter service or cart vendor, but though I'd add it anyway.)

She mostly carried her own snacks for the day into the parks (fruit, carrots, cheese & crackers) but had no trouble finding plenty of options for regular meals.
