DHS Overhaul- What Disney SHOULD Be Doing

Hey everyone! I decided to start this thread because, while all of us are excited about the prospect of a new and improved DHS, some of the rumors of what Disney will be doing to that park are just...bad. People are saying that it's possible for both Tower of Terror and the Great Movie Ride to get replaced, which is not a good decision Disney!!! There is so much more they can do with the park instead of having to only replace attractions (which makes no sense given the small capacity) and, well, destroying the integrity of the park to quite literally become just a place to house IP's.

So, this is a place to post our ideas on what Disney SHOULD be doing for the DHS overhaul rather than continue to make these types of decisions. This isn't some sort of big project, but rather just a place for us to run down our ideas with each other and see what this park could be capable of. I'll post my ideas soon!

In my vision of a park overhaul, it would include a name change. Disney's Hollywood Adventure would be the name of the new park, as it makes sense for what the park would become- not a studio tour, but rather an adventure into what Hollywood is about. And this would be completed with the park having two distinct parts, similar to Epcot in a way with FW/WS.

Each half of the park would consist of four different lands. The front side would include Hollywood Blvd., Sunset Blvd., Echo Lake, and Animation Courtyard. This side would be about taking a trip to "the Hollywood that never was"- a true immersive journey into the heyday of Hollywood, way back a long time ago. Then, the second half of the park would let guests experience the other part of having true Hollywood Adventure- actually getting to experience the movies! The four lands would be Toy Story Land, The Star Wars Experience, Muppet Courtyard, Superhero City. The attraction total would be increased to 18 (if I did the math right :P), and there isn't too much big stuff in here that would be unrealistic, making it a good thing for Disney to do ;) :D :P So, let's begin!

Hollywood Blvd- This beautiful entryway into the park would hardly change, as it really sets up everything well. One of the stores would be removed in order to make way for One Man's Dream, an exhibit that 100% deserves to be in this park. At the end of the street would be none other than the Great Movie Ride, the umbrella attraction that really represents this new parks mission in every way. It would be updated where necessary to have better show scenes, animatronics, etc., but the ride overall would be more or less the same. There would be one more attraction, however, the new Hollywood Trolly (similar to that in DCA). It would go up Hollywood Blvd, and turn to go down...

Sunset Blvd- The immersive old Hollywood street adjacent to Hollywood Blvd. What makes this land great is the more eery feel it exutes, with the Twilight Zone Tower of Terror at the end (yes, not being touched at all). For this reason, stores and their facades will be refurbished back to their original design to have an older, creepier feel, though not so much as to look like some run down ghost town. Also at the end of the street will be the Rockin' Roller Coaster, which while I want to keep it more or less the same, I'm not so sure what to do with as far as who it's "starring" goes. But at the very least a facade update to look like an older recording studio would be good. The Hollywood Hills Ampitheater would remain for nightly showings of a new and upgraded Fantasmic!, and the Theater of the Stars will be completely enclosed once and for all, with BatB on its way out to make way for a new Mary Poppins theater show.

Animation Courtyard- The biggest update to this area will be on the outside. To match this side of the parks theme, all of the facades will change from their modern soundstage design to an old Hollywood animation studio look that matches the other lands here. VotLM will be on its way out for an updated Disney Short Film Festival, from Epcot, this time only showing old classic Disney shorts, all with cool 3D effects. Once Star Wars Land opens, The Launch Bay will close, and will mark the return of the Magic of Disney Animation, which was always a nice and unique experience. Lastly, because I want to be a bit realistic and know Disney would do this, new merchandise and food will be avaliable at the Animators Lounge going where Disney Jr is.

Echo Lake- This land won't have any attractions, but rather will just be the nice peaceful escape from the chaos land around the river. Indiana Jones and beyond will be leaving to make way for other additions, and the theater will be apart of a new land. However, at night it will look nice lit up as the "rich side of Hollywood", and lots of dining options will be here.

And now, we venture into the other side of Disney's Hollywood Adventure park...

Toy Story Land- Complete with Toy Story Midway Mania, the new spinner ride Alien Swirling Saucers, and lastly the coaster Slinky Dog Dash, the land will be as planned. While this area had a lot more potential for it to be better and updated, for the sake of realism, I'll leave this project as Disney plans.

Star Wars Experience- I won't follow the same principal of leaving currently planned projects in tact as in TSL :P Apprently early plans for this land included a Peoplemover-esque attraction, which would add nice energy to the land (and be a nice family friendly people eater Disney!) so I'd add that. This is in addition to the currently unnamed Millennium Falcon attraction and the Battle attraction.

Muppet Courtyard- This land kind of already exists, but not to a full extent yet. The show will remain the same, just rebranded as Jim Henson's Muppet Vision 3D, and a new omnimover dark ride will open called, you guessed it, The Great Muppet Movie Ride! in the current plot of Mama Melrose and beyond. And now, the final land...

Superhero City- This land will have several mini lands enclosed within it. The once Commisary Land will be San Fransokyo street, complete with massive forced perspective illuminating skyscrapers, the donut bakery featured in the film, and an Innoventions type area (where the AI and SD theaters are) that showcase all sorts of cool technology like in the school in the movie, as well as a meet and greet area to meet your favorite characters from this movie and the other superheroes from the other films represented here! This also includes the Incredibles, who will receive their own indrebiles simulator attraction and mini Metropolis area where Star Tours and the Backlot Express are. Finally, on the plot of the Indiana Jones Stunt Show will be a new Guardians of the Galaxy e-ticket ride (essentially the one that would have gone in Universe of Energy).

So, that's it! That took longer to type out than I thought it would :P But I have a lot of ideas for how to help correctly shape the future of DHS! :D ;)

What are all of your thoughts for DHS?! Post here!

Currently working on this park in my "Walt Disney World: The Next Chapter" thread, but here's a basic list of what I would do:

Name change to Disney's Hollywoodland.

Hollywood Boulevard: Addition of Red Car Trolley line and huge refurbishment to The Great Movie Ride, focusing on the greatest films of the 20th century, with some of the lesser-known films being swapped out for more well-known films. (i;e Charlie Chaplin replacing 'Footlight Parade', 'The Godfather' replacing 'The Public Enemy', etc.) Also, the ride would remove its live cast member and gangster hijack with a full-on pre-recorded spiel, but still feature live actors in some of the scenes to fully immerse guests in the films.

Star Wars Spaceport: I'm just gonna wait and see what Disney will bring to the table with this one.

Muppets Courtyard: Addition of The Great Muppet Movie Ride in the place of the Cars/Phineas and Ferb meet & greets.

Pixar Place: I would expand this land to focus on more Pixar films. Starting from an entry point modeled after the Emeryville studio, you pass through lands based on Monsters, Inc., The Incredibles, Ratatouille, Inside Out and of course, Toy Story.

Animation Courtyard: VotLM theater gets transformed into the Walt Disney Theatre, where each month, a different show takes to the stage. Star Wars Launch Bay gets replaced by an all-new version of Disney Animation, modeled after the one in DCA. Animator's Palate is re-produced in a building in-between Disney Animation and Disney Jr.

Sunset Boulevard: A new version of the iconic Snow White dark ride takes up the space held by Once Upon a Time, Mouse About Town and Sunset Club Couture. Theater of the Stars gets enclosed, Beauty and the Beast leaves the theater and joins the Walt Disney Theatre rotation, and The Golden Mickeys takes its place (It wouldn't be Hollywood without a big awards ceremony, after all). Fantasmic! gets heavily revised, with new villain sequences, a sequence to replace Pocahontas and updated effects.

And that's what I'd do.

Well my first post after my vacation of two weeks, but I plan for this to be a detailed one! Here's what I would do, and being slightly realistic. In my vision this is what I can see Hollywood Studios like by 2021.

Hollywood Boulevard -

IMG_0929.jpg
Attractions:
  • The Great Movie Ride - The second vehicle will always be running for maximum capacity starting October 2017. While the ride itself will close for a yearlong refurbishment during October from 2020 - 2021. Opening just in time for the 50th, the only remaining original attraction from opening day will receive big changes. Here are a list of the scenes that have changed -
    • Musicals (Mary Poppins - Spoonful of Sugar, Grease - Grease Lighting, West Side Story - Tonight)
    • Adventure (Indiana Jones Raiders - Boulder Chase, Eye of Anubis)
    • Horror (Nosferatu)
    • Animation (Pinocchio - When You Wish Upon a Star) (Replaces Tarzan)
    • Romance (Titanic - I'll Never Let Go)
    • Epic (Gone With the Wind - Burning Atlanta) (Replaces Fantasia)
    • End Montage
Entertainment:
  • Citizens of Hollywoodland
  • Hooray for Hollywood : A Stage Musical - Taking place on Center Stage this new show will replace that Star Wars clip show during the day. It will make its debut the summer of 2020. It will follow the journey of a woman trying to be a star in the golden years of Hollywood. Of course she gets the big part by the end of the 15 minute show. There will be a Holidays and Valentines version of the show.
  • Move It, Shake It, Dance & Play It - This 'parade' to me doesn't feel at home at MK, but I could see it working at DHS. The move will happen in October 2018. It will remain mostly the same except for the stage float would be cut, and Center Stage will be used instead. More characters will be added to the parade including Genie, Sebastian, Lumiere, and Olaf to name the most notable changes. This parade will run three to four times per day depending on attendance.
  • Awesome Mix Dance Party - A fun nighttime dance show that would open May 2017 to coincide with the new film. Starlord and Gamora will be in attendance as songs from the Awesome Mix tapes I played through the night.
  • Disney's Electrical Parade - It is highly probable that for the 50th, Magic Kingdom would get a new nighttime parade, but instead of axing this show in classic Disney fashion it is sent to a different park. Arriving in October 2018, Disney's Electrical Parade will once again be refurbished, and feature some new changes. The Cinderella Unit will ax the Stepsisters, and see Prince Charming move into the pumpkin carriage with Cinderella. In the Prince's and the Sisters's form spots will be Belle and Beast along with Rapunzel and Flynn. The last change to the original floats is that the Pete's Dragon Unit will be changed as Pete (the human) will have a costume change to match the new movie. There will also be new units added. The first new unit will be the Hercules Unit utilizing the two floats from the Hercules Night Parade, this unit will be before the Pete's Dragon Unit. The next new unit will be the Sleeping Beauty Unit, this unit will utilize the former Mickey float from Fantillusion, and turn it into a float for Aurora. Following that float will be another float from Fantillusion, and it'll be the butterfly float. This unit will be in front of the Alice in Wonderland Unit. The last new unit will be the Aladdin unit as it uses the former Agrabah float from Fantillusion, and will be before the Cinderella Unit.
  • This parade will run once per night if Fantasmic! has two performances, and runs twice when the Fantasmic! has either one showing or is dark.
  • Meet Your Favorite Star Studded Friends!
    • Donald Duck
    • Daisy Duck
    • Goofy
    • Pluto
    • Chip and Dale
    • Max Goof (Seasonal)
    • Lilo (Seasonal)
    • Stitch (Seasonal)

twilight-zone-tower-of-terror-gallery00.jpg

Attractions:
  • Beauty and the Beast - This show will undergo a major refurbishment from December 2016 to May 2017. Upon reopening Theater of the Stars will be enclosed, and the show will be updated with new props, costumes, and music based off the new remake.
  • The Twilight Zone : The Hollywood Tower of Terror
  • Guardians of the Galaxy : Flight from Knowhere - Opening in March 2020, this new roller coaster will be replacing Rock'n'Rollercoaster. In fact the themeing of the entire area (G-Force Records) will go away with a new Superhero Studio theme to be the replacement. Guests will journey with a crew member of the Milano depending on the train they board. Guests will be racing against the Collector and his forces as the GOTG will be on a mission to return a valuable artifact from the Collector's collection to the Xandar government.
  • The Spirit of Moana - A brand new musical perfomance held in the Sunset Showcase adjacent to Guardians of the Galaxy : Flight from Knowhere. This show will open in the Summer of 2017 as part of a new Moana Summer Fun promotion, and will stay long term. Sunset Showcase is currently home to Club Disney which is in seasonal operation a replacement isn't unreasonable.
  • Pocahontas : A Musical Spectacular - Going with the classic Disney tradition, this show will use props from the former Pocahontas number in Fantasmic! In fact its basically expanding that scene into a full 20 minute show sans the projections. This show will debut in October 2019, after the yearlong refurbishment of the Hollywood Hills Amphitheater.
  • Fantasmic! - Closing for a yearlong refurbishment in October 2018, the show will undergo many changes including upgraded technology. The refurbished show will seem brand new as the majority of the old show was cut and changed out for newer ideas. Here's a full on description of the show -
The show begins with a faint musical note that swells into a lush fanfare, revealing Mickey Mouse onstage. He dances and orchestrates various water fountain effects to the show's theme, until bringing up the mist screens, which fades into the "Sorcerer's Apprentice" sequence from Fantasia. From there, the falling stars of the scene whips into a snowy flurry. Ambient whooshing sounds can then be heard as the show transitions into the castle of Arrendelle. The screen shows the scene of when Elsa was labeled a monster at the her coronation followed by her running out of the castle. The screen disappears as Elsa begins to run from the steps of the seating to an opening in the fencing. Behind men that are wishing to catch her are in quick pursuit. Elsa stops in front of the river, as a hard to see plexiglass platform shows up as it appears Elsa runs across the water, and right when Elsa gets to the stage on the the other side the screens come back to life. They now show Elsa running across the fjord, and freezing it, afterwards it shows the mountain as Let It Go begins to play. Using projections, two actors as Elsa, fountains, screens, and fake snow this may just be the most ambitious Let It Go performance to date. The scene closes with the the screen showing the place doors closing. The scene segues into the Bubble Montage.

- I Wanna Be Like You from Jungle Book
- Take You There from Princess and the Frog

Jiminy Cricket appears onscreen underwater searching for Pinocchio. An animated Monstro appears suddenly, accompanied by a heavy musical score as he crashes through water. The sea morphs into the "Sorcerer's Apprentice" flood scene. As Mickey looks around in the dark, a ship caught in a storm appears. The screens disappear, and the lights darken.

A cannon is fired from the Black Pearl. Jack Sparrow, Barbossa, Davy Jones, Black Beard, and countless other pirates participate in a stunt sequence. Following the ship is an escape boat loaded with treasure. The scene ends with Jack swinging from a rope on the end of the boat onto the escape boat. As the scene concludes, three small floats arrive carrying Belle and the Beast, Rapunzel and Flynn Ryder, and Aurora and Prince Philip, with the accompanying signature melody from each film—"Beauty and the Beast," "I See the Light," and "Once Upon A Dream".

The music takes on an ominous tone as Mickey's dream takes a turn for the worse. The Evil Queen on stage, calling for her magic mirror—which appears onscreen in animated form. Angered by Mickey's optimistic imagination, she transforms herself into a hag, and calls in her most sinister friends; Ursula, Cruella De Vil, Jafar, Judge Frollo, and Dr.Facilier. Who all ecstatically joins the Queen's plot to destroy Mickey. Dr. Facilier decides to take on Mickey himself by calling in his "friends" as they take over the stage. Mickey destroys Facilier's Pendant as Facilier is sucked into the Underworld. Hades appears calling upon Chernabog who summons the deceased spirits . He summons Maleficent who threatens Mickey, now in his Brave Little Tailor outfit, as she transforms herself into an enormous dragon. On stage, a 45-foot dragon sets the waters ablaze breathing fire onto the river. Mickey faces the dragon, claiming that he is in control of his imagination, and defeats the dragon, destroying all the villains in the process.

Everything is silent, until Tinker Bell and her fairy friends all appear restoring the dreams of the world. As they leave magical stars sparkle on the stage as Steamboat Willie approaches. A spark of pyrotechnics ignite from Steamboat Willie, revealing black and white Mickey in Steamboat Willie attire. The vessel glides past the audience, carrying several dozens of Disney characters as a celebratory atmosphere prevails. With another flash, Mickey appears atop the highest point of the stage as the Sorcerer's Apprentice as he controls a final series of water, fireworks, laser and light orchestrations. Mickey disappears and reappears onstage in his formal attire from the beginning of the show, bidding the audience farewell and disappears once again in a bright blast of fireworks.

  • Disney's Electrical Parade - It is highly probable that for the 50th Magic Kingdom would get a new nighttime parade, but insteand of axing this show in classic Disney fashion it is sent to a different park. Arriving in October 2018, Disney's Electrical Parade will once again be refurbished, and feature new changes. The Hercules Unit from the Hercules Parade from the 90's will return, The Cinderella Unit will ax the Stepsisters, and see Prince Charming move into the pumpkin carriage with Cinderella. In the Prince's and the Sisters's form spots will be Belle and Beast along with Rapunzel and Flynn. The last change is that the Pete's Dragon Unit will be changed as Pete (the human) will have a costume change to match the new movie. This parade will run once per night if Fantasmic! has two performances, and runs twice when the Fantasmic! has either one showing or is dark.

Sounds cool, but I would recommend having Frozen replace Monstro during a Holiday edition of Fantasmic.
Nah, Frozen already has its own segment. At that point it will be over saturated in the show, imo.

What is "Escape from the 501st"?
The name I threw on the Star Wars Land ride with the stormtroopers that you have to escape. the 501st is a legion of stormtrooopers, so that's how I put together the name. I'm not sure if any of the currently announced Star Wars Land/Toy Story Land rides have names yet so I just made my best guess. Here's a picture for reference.

2021 and Beyond -

Now that Walt Disney World celebrated the 50th, its time to look ahead . Here's what I think should happen for the next 10 years or so :

Echo Jungle -

The-Jungle-Book-3.jpg

Echo Jungle will bring something missing from Disney's Hollywoodland. It will bring a water ride, and also trees lots of trees. The Hyperion Theater, Peevy's Polar Pipeline, 50's Prime Time, and Hollywood and Vine are all spared, and are annexed to Hollywood Boulevard. Gertie's along with the boat diner are demolished, along with Echo Lake Bites. The busts are relocated to outside the park entrance. The lake will be drained for a while to allow for new islands to be built, and more tropical plants to be planted.

Attractions:
  • Bandar-Long Rapids - A rapids raft ride through the jungles of the modern Jungle Book. The highlight of the ride will be the Bandar Long Temple scene. Rafts will go up a hill into the temple, and be met by monkeys. Piles of fruit are everywhere along with treasure. King Louie will make an appearance. He asks for ans red fire, you refuse, and a fast action packed chase through the temple resulting in multiple drops, and a race through the temple.
