Debating on Renting at OKW or staying at a Moderate? My Experience...

The point of this post is to provide some experiences of renting at OKW versus staying at a Moderate resort. Opinions are my own. It was a tough decision for us, I could not find much to help make a decision. Perhaps this will help you if you are our in our boat.

I have stayed at WDW a dozen times or so staying in downtown Disney (it will always be that to me!) transitioning to CB / PO and CS. Its been a decade since we were able to get to WDW; but we made it back! Things change in 10 years but many things remain the same. We did venture back to CS / CB nd CS to show my daughter where we stayed in the past and to dine.

Why we stayed at moderates in the past…Is this you?

1) Cost – the deluxe pricing was simply not in our budget – though we did stay at WL the year of 9/11 when CB was closed. We were upgraded. I know some argue WL started as a moderate and is not really a deluxe…whatever…WL was beautiful and offered boat transportation to MK but not so overwhelming that we’d spend extra to return to a 'deluxe'.

2) Food – particularly food courts. We all have varied diets, eat different things at different times, like to grab and go at times and sit down at other times or some of us dine in while others eat by the pool. at the same time. The courts always served us well. The deluxes offer some grab and go items but not the extent of the food courts. They do offer sit down dining but we had neither the time nor money to dine there every day. In this respect the moderates severed us well. Note: the moderate's food courts are not as great as we remember them-won’t get into that, suffice to say we still used them on our recent trip.

3) Theming – One could argue the moderate's theming and foliage is just as nice as the deluxe's. Further we love ‘walk around the resort’ experience the moderates offer. We feel like we are in a world away from everything else and love it. No cars, no busses just the scenery and quiet casual strolls.

4) Pools – the themed pools at the moderates seem as good as they deluxes – they do seem to be more crowded. Fortunately, they have numerous quiet pools generally within a short walk from wherever your room is.

5) Proximity – by this I mean from my room to food, pools and busses. Yes some rooms, at CB in particular, can be quite a walk but we NEVER had difficulty getting a room request near where we wanted be….the main themed pool /food area.

6) Transportation – Some moderates have a boat to DD. All have buss transportation. I never recall any real issues with the busses, but, yes, sometimes one could have a 15 to 20-minute wait. Nevertheless, we always used the busses in lew of our rental car. The deluxes likely win in this category since some offer direct boat/monorail or walking into the parks.

7) Price $150 – $200 a night. Deluxes are a lot more than that.

So why Old Key West?

Well, we know a DVC member who had no interest in returning this year who offered us a week at a point rate you would need to be crazy not to take advantage of. Its been a decade since we’d been to WDW, we perceived the DVC as an u'pgrade'…we thought it a chance to try something new on our budget in a higher category than we were accustomed too.

To be honest, we watched all the video of their available DVC resorts and OKW was our second to last choice followed by Saratoga. Why? Well, we liked the idea of walking into EPCOT or HS. Sadly Beach/Yacht club and Boardwalk was not available, even 6 months in advance. In fact only OKW and SS was. OKW sort of looked like CB and heck, it had the biggest rooms! I never understood why Disney put a bed and pull out couch in all their other DVC studios…since there would be three of us I figured a bed would be more comfortable for our daughter. We booked OKW.

The room was great. Oddly shaped (watch a video), probably the space could have been better used but the 3 of us never felt crowded. The bathroom was large. We had a larger fridge than I recall the mod’s having plus microwave and cabinet. We had our own patio…small but enough for 2. We had central air. We had a parking spot directing in front of our room

The downside to the room was that there was no ‘get ready’ area outside the bathroom. The mod’s offer a sink and mirror outside the bath. The ladies like this since one could be showering and the other doing their hair. The OKW configuration consisting of everything in the bathroom slowed us down. Honestly, I think I’d trade the microwave, cabinet and bar sink for a full sink and mirror. Also, we found the dresser of drawers a bit small for 3 likely not enough if you have 4.

Resort pools. I found the resort main pool hum drum. I think the mod’s have a better themed main pools. Of course the mod’s are way more crowded…not sure why because I think OKW surely has a lot of people in its sprawling area. The quiet pools are very nice and were not too crowded either.

Food: This was the killer for us. No food court…we knew that going in. What we did not know is that there would be NO where to grab something to eat and sit INSIDE in cool air to eat it EXCEPT the sit down restaurant…which was quite expensive and not conducive to varied grab and go items. Yes the quiet pools had some grab and go food choices and there is one by the main pool but no where near the selection offered by the food courts the moderates have. . Sadly the quiet pool grab and go's had limited hours, 11 -5. The main area was open till only 10pm. The refillable mug refill station at the main area was not up to Disney standards. It was supposed to be open all night however many times by 9pm ice was gone, beverages sold out not to mention the very small area was always sticky mess surrounded by flies. I think the food and beverage area upset us the most. (Note you can get your refillable mug refreshed at the quiet pools but they take your cup and do it for you…. when they are opened)

Proximity: this was unfortunate. We put our request to be somewhere near the main pool / food area in 6 months ahead of time. We did use online check in and again made our requests known. Check in is at 4pm. We noted we would arrive at 1pm. I got a text at 1pm saying to go to the main desk. Uh Oh. Fortunately, there was no line but no reason offered why we could not have been texted our room number so I am unsure why I had to go stop there. Nevertheless the area we were stationed was not where near the main area and even a trek to the nearest quiet pool. I asked to be moved and was told nothing was available. I should have said I’d wait till 4pm if necessary. Fortunately, we had rented a car…and they had an internal bus…

Transportation: Well, I was none to impressed with transportation. To be blunt the design of OKY does not lend itself to efficient transportation. It’s a large ‘resort’ that seems to jut out in many directions none of which allow the buss to circle around but rather all appear to be dead ends which force the busses to continually circle around at the end of each. By the way, we saw the internal bus only 3 times in seven days. I meant to ask if it perhaps makes rounds at other resorts. The is a nice boat to Downtown Disney (Ok, Disney Springs). Only ONE was running though. We enjoyed the ride but the bus would have been quicker.

Resort Feel: This was a biggie for us. It did not feel like a resort to me. More like a residential neighborhood with palm trees. After a few days I figured out why. The mods isolate you from the cars, traffic and busses. OKW put you in the middle of it. Its like an inside out mod resort. Instead walking around lakes on paths INSIDE the resort, rather there is a golf course therein…not meant for strolling. Strolling is done OUTSIDE. To us, that’s just not what we were used to. The walk to the main area was ridiculously far because for some reason they did not add a bridge over the waterway down our end. Look at building 30 on a map. Should you be staying further than that, be sure you rent a car to get you around. Especially if you plan on going to the main area or even a quiet pool. I know its a drag but the Phantom Internal bus may never be seen.

They say you can rent a room at this resort for the same price of the mod’s. We paid even less so I really can’t complain. Personally I’d like to try Saratoga which offers the ‘inside’ strolling and inside counter service along with 2 themed pools open 24/7. I understand thought the rooms are a little smaller and have a bed and pull out sofa.

Personally, I found no advantage to renting at OKW over a moderate. In fact I wish our friends could do their timeshare at a moderate. I have to say OKW was a lot less crowded than the Mods. (We tended to drive to a mod, get breakfast then take the mod bus to whatever park we were going to, sometimes eating at the mod again upon our return) I guess if less people is a priority for you, renting here will be less than say staying at Polynesian or Contemporary.

We’d like to return at XMAS 2017. (If they bring the Osbourne lights back somewhere!) I think I’d like to try DVC WL if we can get it. I would not be disappointed to return to OKW but would also not be upset staying at a mod if that does not work out….in fact, considering there would likely be less people there in early December, and I might get a free dining package, it may be better for us.

If this helps anyone…great. If you have any questions…just email me.

I feel like if I wasn't in DVC I still would rent DVC every time I go. When my stepmom would go with us she would rent at BLT all the time because that's our "home resort" and she got some really good deals. It all just depends on when you go and things like that. The prices literally fluctuate by the day because of how they break down the whole "seasons" thing. I definitely feel "spoiled" by the deluxe accommodations we are used to now but if I had to stay at a moderate resort it would probably be Port Orleans. (I'm pretty sure it still counts as a moderate, right?) It's really nice from what I hear. My biggest problem with OKW is where it's so big it takes a while for the buses to run through the whole complex.

I can see what you mean, having stayed at OKW many times. Our biggest complaint is always the busses. We have been lucky to stay near Hospitality House so we can walk (but even then it's bad in the heat).

I would say if you're able to get Wilderness Lodge, go for it. Out of all DVC (except for Poly and GF, which we haven't been able to get reservations) this is the one we like the most. The DVC wing is secluded away from the main lodge, but still close enough to grab what you want. The feel is great too :)

Thanks for sharing the review!

Last year was my first time ever staying at a moderate- 1 night only. We extended our trip by 1 night to fit in Disney Springs and Poly was completely sold out. The size of POFQ and the boat to DS made my decision. It was cute and pretty, our room faced the water but there is not a balcony or porch. The only negative was my 5 year old (at the time) called the slide a "kiddie slide" and wanted to go back to the Lava Pool.
If I ever was on the same situation again, we would choose POFQ once again.

I do always get confused when people talk about a "food court". What is so different than at Poly/GF/CR? They have hot food at the quick service restaurants there.
At YC and BC we always got breakfast on the Boardwalk, and typically ate a WS most meals (F&W time).

OP- I have stayed at OKW once on a last minute (booked night before) trip, there's things I like, but like you said- it feels like a condo complex. I have never stayed at or even visited WL, but I know many people who love it, so definitely give it a try! :)

Those WL rentals are really reasonable. When I've booked for our friends and family through DVC I've seen some really good deals there. AK and OKW are generally the absolute cheapest though. The only thing about AK that bothers me is how far it is from the MK. I'm honestly spoiled from being so used to staying and BLT and just being able to walk. We've stayed at OKW one night when we just flew in late to get some sleep and wake up the next morning and move over to BLT and the rooms were fine but the bus routes are a little crazy in there. We've stayed in every DVC resort except Poly, WL, and Saratoga and when it comes to the niceness of the rooms I'd have to give it to VGF but when it comes to overall convenience for a MK devotee then I have to give it to BLT. Did you do the Bungalows yet? We don't have enough points to do it because it's like a dang king's ransom to stay there. The studios are a great value though.

I am not a DVC member and also have never rented points. I came extremely close this year back in March. I could have booked a BLT studio for significantly less than the Contemporary tower theme park view. The only 2 reasons that I didn't move forward was 1. The size of the studio frightened me. And 2. It will be my son's first time staying there (my first time since the 90s), and I felt like we should be in the tower so he can see the monorail running through it..also for convenience. I would definitely like to rent points someday though!

September 2015 was my first time at WDW since 2009. It was also my first time there as a mother. My resort choices are now solely made on what I think kiddo will enjoy the most. Poly has always had my heart, and we will go back there, but I felt like the Contemporary would be perfect for a winter trip (especially since we won't be swimming). I'd also like to do BWI with him, I know people think it's creepy, but I think he would love the Luna pool. GF is one resort that I know he won't care about, I enjoyed my stays there, but much prefer Poly. The theme is not very unique, and the pool wouldn't excite him.
We will be at AKL club level (the CL is only because I want to try some of the food offerings) for 2 nights pre cruise thanksgiving and day after, and then return to CR after the cruise for 4 nights. We aren't doing any parks on the pre cruise portion, so it's the perfect time to try AKL! I don't see us ever staying there again, the proximity to the parks are a turn off for me.

We stayed at Saratoga Springs this year for 2 nights just to experience something different. We rented points. We enjoyed it quite a bit. We were situated very close to the food court and main pool. The kids loved the slides at both pools. The theming feels mostly bolted on at the end, like they designed a very nice resort and then decided at the end to go with a horse racing/springs overlay theme and did what they could with it. I'm sure there are some great details if I dug into it more and really researched but that was my impression. We did the movie by the pool one night and were not that impressed with the layout of the area, especially compared to the Poly or even somewhere like Cabana Bay at Universal. I didn't feel immersed in Disney magic or anything like that while we stayed there. Whereas the theming at Pop or AKL is pretty in-your-face with Mickey and gang, that isn't something we saw or experienced at Saratoga for the most part. If you have young kids and want them to really get the full, 100% Mickey-flavored, round-the-clock vacation experience this probably isn't the best choice. However, if your kids are a little older and value some more laid back time and a bit more tranquility then this is a great environment for your family. My 2 cents on renting there.

Agreed with everything you said! We stayed at OKW for the first time last January. We normally stay at POR. OKW is definitely charming and relaxed, but it's absolutely not what we're used to at POR. The kitchenette in the room was nice to have, and the balcony overlooking the golf course was great. But we found it weird to be walking along the road with cars and buses driving around. We were also very close to the highway and could hear trucks from inside our room. We also knew going in that the food options would be limited, and we definitely missed the POR mill almost every day we were there.

We're going back to POR this coming Feb/March and can't wait.

We are going down for a long weekend in March - 3/2 through 3/6. Normally we love to stay at Port Orleans Riverside. The price for 4 nights there was $1073 for a Garden View. I was able to rent at Animal Kingdom Lodge - studio - standard view for $986.

A deluxe for less than a moderate? yes please!!

IMO, a deluxe doesn't feel like a deluxe if you don't get housekeeping.

The housekeeping and the layouts of the rooms (at Poly and BLT anyway) were serious deterrents for me. Also with Poly I like the decor of the regular rooms more than the DVC rooms, haven't seen the villas in person, but from photos anyway. Plus if I remember correctly, there was not a TPV villa? Could be wrong on that. For me there was pros and cons, and the cons outweighed the money saved, I am not ruling it out for the future, renting looks so attractive..and will admit that I wish I wasn't so picky.
We aren't messy, I have no issue hanging up my towel and straightening my own bed. I am excited to stay at Animal Kingdom Lodge!
Admittedly, I always straighten our beds in the morning..and do hang up our towels, habit I guess. So not having housekeeping probably wouldn't be as big of a deal as I think it would be! lol. I know people rave about AKL!!! Please report back with some tips for me..we will be there Thanksgiving and the day after! Have an amazing time!!

The size/selection. Most of the DVC/Deluxe resorts really only a single station offering 8-10 entrees at any given meal. The moderates and values both have 3-4 stations, each of which tends to focus on a type of food and offer 4-6 entrees each. So deluxe may offer a single flatbread pizza, while mod/value will have a pizza window with multiple toppings you can customize from. I may be over simplifying a bit, but look at the menus in the dining section here and compare.

Regular, cash paying guests get housekeeping at DVC resorts. it's only when you are staying on points that you don't get daily housekeeping. But as @Yelloweaver said, I'm not messy and can hang up my towels, empty my trash and make up my bed.

I stayed at OKW. The studio rooms are similar to a moderate... two beds, no pull out. Other than the kitchenette, my room didn't feel like a DVC studio. And I agree with the OP, the lack of eating options was surprising. QS? That counter outside. What really got me? A three story building with no elevators. I got a room that, while on the fairway, also overlooked the highway. And the room was right at the bus stop. So I was woken up early each morning with the "beep, beep, beep" of the buses. Yeah.

I'd only stay there again if there were no other options for me. It's a lovely resort, I liked that I could walk around the resort on nice sidewalks, but it just wasn't what I expected.

I've stayed in all the DVC resorts but AK. I finally made a reservation for next January, to use points I cannot bank. Looking forward to it... got a Savannah view studio. Not really concerned about the proximity to other parks, as I plan on spending time exploring the resort. This is going to be a very laid back trip a month before Princess Half weekend.

Oh ok. Thanks for the response! But at Poly for example you have plenty more than just Captain Cooks to choose from...and the best part- room service at the deluxe resorts. It's a life saver in the morning and nice after a day at the parks. I couldn't get a reservation at Kona Cafe for the times I wanted, so we ordered a breakfast from there one day, and dinner another. It was wonderful to eat in our pjs instead of dealing with more crowds and loud children..and letting my own child just kick back and relax for a bit.

And that is pretty much some of the reasoning behind the difference in the CS selections. Values have no TS, so have a huge CS. Moderates have 1 TS (except for POFQ) so a medium CS. Deluxe 2 or more TS + room service, so a small CS. DVC is a toss up, some are only 1 TS with a small CS, but those units all have some sort of kitchen, so guests are able to prep/cook their own meals.

So the OP who is used to staying at a moderate, with a large food court selection and 4+ soda fountains for refills going to OKW is a bit of a shock. Even more so than most of the other deluxe/DVC because the CS at OKW is a walk up window with a small selection, and only 1 soda fountain.
