Not that this makes this any less tragic.. but this death DID NOT HAPPEN AT THE RICHARD PETTY DRIVING EXPERIENCE IN WALT DISNEY WORLD..

It was the one in Daytona.

Just so no one is confused. This happened at the Daytona Raceway not at Disney.

My sympathies are with the family.

Not that it really matters, but it should be pointed out that this was the facility in Daytona, not the one at Disney.

It is tragic, nonetheless.

Despite the truly tragic affair, it should be duly noted that this accident did not occur at the Walt Disney World Richard Petty Driving Experience.

Just pointing out that they all said the same thing. My condolences to the family.

Oh the Slantinel! It's so sensational! They twist the facts! What biased reporting! It's clear they're out to get Richard Petty! They're trying to imply The King himself killed the man! Now this man's family is gonna sue the track and give NASCAR a bad name! NASCAR is good family fun! Obviously the man did something to cause his own death! He must have stood up while driving! If this crash had happened anywhere else they wouldn't have covered it! Apparently there isn't any REAL news going on!

(Ridiculous, huh? Well, this is the same response that we see on these boards anytime there is a death at Disney. It just goes to show how overly-sensitive and defensive some Disney fans are. Except for maybe diehard race enthusiasts, anyone reading about this morning's death would see nothing wrong about the article, nor the decision to report the incident, and few would have a negative impression of Richard Petty's operation until more details are revealed. The same goes for deaths at Disney. For the most part, the media acts responsibly in those cases, just as they have in covering this death at Daytona.)

What is odd is that no one on this particular thread has said anything like you are implying. As a matter of fact, the only things said were of sympathy with the family and pointed out the mistake of the op that this was at Daytona and not Disney...

so perhaps your soapbox/rant was a bit premature in this case?

EDIT: I re-read and realized the OP did say Daytona, so my bad on that....but still about 300 posts made sure everyone knew that this was in Daytona. Still no criticisms of the ol' fishwrapper though...so still think your rant was a bit off base.

You proved my point.. No one gets defensive or critical when it happens elsewhere and the media covers it. Only when it happens to Disney are there allegations of sensationalism and slanting. Why is no one criticizing this article? Cuz it didn't happen at Disney. But its written no differently than reports about incidents at WDW...which do get slammed (wrongfully, in my opinion)

Just to be up front I have not read this particular article, but considering that there was a loss of life to a tragic accident, your rant seems excessively insensitive.

Haven't read the slantinel's latest on it... but the autopsy reveals it was a heart attack that apparently triggered the accident. The latest story as of 3pm Monday is here

Another comment... the Orlando TV press is presenting the whole "driving experience" thing as a RIDE. The fellow that died was on the ride....other people have died on the ride. The "driving experience" is a training session that ultimately lets the participants drive solo (if they want) at limited speeds around the track.

It sounds suspiciously as if they're trying to compare it to Expedition Everest or Mission Space to me :hammer:

Don't let Skyway read that or he'll repost his rant session.

Welll... I didn't mean to imply they were actually trying to compare it to WDW specifically - just in the sense that they made it sound like the guy hopped in a roller coaster ride and keeled over. A +100-150mph (not sure what they limit them to) car being driven on a super speedway isn't an amusement park ride. That just bugged me.

In their defense (I guess), apparently you can get into the program and just hop in the car for a ride rather than go through the whole training and going solo bit.

Ok, I'm done critiquing :)
