I believe you have to check in first, but you do know that you can check in whenever you arrive at your resort, right? If you arrive at your resort in the morning, you can still check in, though your room may not be ready. Even so, you can leave your bags with luggage service and head to the parks to play. Come back later and your room should be ready by then, and they can even put your luggage in the room for you instead of making you retrieve it whenever you're back from the parks.

3pm check-in doesn't mean anything. You can show up at the counter at 8am and check in. The only thing 3pm means is that your room might not be ready until then.

Your credits are there to be used during the day you check in - you can use them anytime, they just need activating when you check in

Yes, online check-in is just so you can make certain requests. You'll still have to check in when you get to the resort. There will be a 'special' online check-in line for you to wait in, which will have a few less people in it to save you time.

A lot of resorts are doing straight to your room check in now if you do online check in. That's how ours was in October at Kidani. We never had to go to the front desk at all and had the dining plan. We received an email then later they just sent us a text with our room number when it was ready.

That happened to us as well. We got off the bus. They welcomed us and then told us we could head straight to the parks!
