Hey, I remember seeing a Billboard outside MGM maingate a few years back advertising a new attraction starring David Copperfield. David Copperfield: Underground or something. What ever happened to this?

The David Copperfield side of the equasion literally went bankrupt. They wanted other places around the country too...but it was a financial bust before it ever got off the ground.

I remember they had big plans for this resteraunt. Levetating tables etc. I it was supposed to be physically built "underground".

The david copperfield project was aborted by him in december of '98 due to the failure of the New York project. Apparently the investors perceived it as a theme resturant , At that time the market for theme resturants were losing favor with the public, so with that the investors pulled out and the new York Resturant closed. According to his website he still wants to make a go at the project, But financing is the key.

Both of these responses sound right.

I know there is another thread on this if you want to search. If my memory holds there are diagrams, pictures and more details of what the restaurant/shop area was supposed to look like as well as more details about why it was cancelled.

A Magic Underground giftshop was also set to open at Downtown Disney directly accross from Planet Hollywood. After months and months of DC's Magic Underground emblem covering the opaque windows of the shop-to-be, it finally opened as a Disney shop whose merchandise changes with the season.

The Current Magic Masters gift shop (across from Bongo's on the Virgin Megastore side of the plaza) has nothing to do with DC, as some thought the DC project evolved into Magic Masters. The Magic Masters shop used to be a western style clothing store which saw a fraction of the business of its current replacement.

I remember that ad back in 98-99... then it was removed and the Star Wars Shop was set there. Too bad it didn´t happen...must have been cool.

I think it would have been even better if Copperfield project was not only a theme restaurant but also a show resembling the illusions the magician does in his acts but with Disney characters and of course MGM's touch.

I believe that was sort of a satellite store for the Wild Horse Saloon. I’m not sure about the timing but I’m pretty sure it closed up around the same time the restaurant/club on Pleasure Island did.

As for Magic Masters making more money… I would have to be a bit doubtful of that. Their catalogue of available merchandise is extremely limited to only a small handful of the most amateur effects and the last time I was around there, the guy at the counter talked with me for a while and according to him, they were more than a little disappointed with sales… Then again, he was also quick to concede that part of that problem could have had to do with the listed inventory which could be listed nicely in large lettering on a outside menu sized board. The now long gone Disney run shop on Main Street in the Magic Kingdom actually had a wider range of products…

I should have been more specific. When I said that the new Magic Masters store sees more business, I was referring to customers/crowd and not business in the terms of generated revenue. Obviously, this is due to the magic demonstrations and curious tourists. It seems as though Magic Masters sees more potential customers (crowd) in one hour than the Wild Horse saw all day.

Yes, their merchandise is extremely limited, but as for the "most amateur effects," I would have to say the merchandise found at the Main Street magic shop fit that description. Compared to sticking pencils through a balloon, magic money changing cases and squirting quarters, Magic Masters does offer some items that, when presented properly, create a great audience response. Unfortunately, I do not agree with the sales pitching done at Magic Masters. For example, the "rising card effect" being "easy enough for a six year old"? Just because a six year old "could" do the trick doesn't mean a six year old "should" do the trick, or that he will actually fool anybody with it. A six old is better off working with (what's referred to as) a "stripper" deck than with a rising card deck. But such honest analysis would not be in the best interest of profit ...unfortunately.

So what's in the Saloon's place? It was already replacing the Neon Armadillo, right?

Wildhorse Saloon was a club on pleasure island that offered dancing to country music. It was shut down last year and replaced by Motion. Motion is club that a selection of today's music.

So besides 8-Track (and obviously Comedy Warehouse and the Adventurer's Club) EVERYTHING in PI is regular tunes? I mean, sure, you have BET and the Beach Club, but you get my drift...
