Daily kosher items succeed at Cosmic Ray's Starlight Cafe
05/02/2003

BAY LAKE, FL (Eyes and Ears) -- Cosmic Ray's Starlight Cafe at the Magic Kingdom Park has successfully introduced kosher food to its regular quick-service menu.
The term kosher food refers to certain animals that can be eaten and certain processes of food preparation in accordance with Jewish rituals.

"In the past, a guest who wanted kosher food had to dine in one of our table-service restaurants," said Jackie Grass, Food and Beverage area manager. "If they came to the park today and decided they wanted kosher food, it'd be difficult, because it would take time to call the restaurant ahead, and the restaurant would have to acquire the meals, prepare them and arrange priority seating."

About a year and a half ago, Magic Kingdom Food and Beverage leaders began devising ways to serve kosher food that could be prepared almost immediately in quick-service restaurants.

"We developed a plan using high-powered microwaves that make it easy for us to prepare them," Jackie said.

The quick service kosher menu features hot dogs, beef burgers and corn beef sandwiches.

Jackie said the menu, which the restaurant began offering in February, has been very successful.

"More and more people are calling and asking about our menu," Jackie said. "We serve about 20 meals a day. At first, we had little advertising, but we've now gone all over property sharing our menus with Guest Relations, Guest Services? getting the word out. There's definitely a demand for it, and we'll see where we go in terms of expanding to other quick-service restaurants from here."

Wow!

This is really good news for the Jewish community! I know that i personally don't keep kosher (despite my name), but this is awesome information for me to pass on to some of my kosher-keeping friends!

good for Disney! i'm glad to see that they're always working to incorporate different cultures in their parks in whatever way they can!

but, is it just me, or does the food seem to be a lot more expensive? now, i'm not Jewish, and in fact, i've never known anyone personally who is Jewish, so i'm not sure if kosher food is really more expensive or not. or have i not been paying close enough attention to the prices of food at Disney?

Kosher food is always going to be more expensive than normal food. The prices really don't seem that far out of line for kosher food. Even in grocery stores, kosher meat is more expensive than normal meat.

Right--it costs more to prepare. But, even so, considering it comes with those potato croquettes, it's not that out of line for Disney...at most a buck or two more than normal...I'm not even sure it's that much more. Disney, in general, is expensive:) Kudos to them for this, though. I hope it expands to all four parks, now.

Dunno if Ray is Hasidic, as (I think) you're implying. (No comment on the attempted transliteration of the Yiddish, let alone the phrasing.)

Many Orthodox, Conservative, and even some Reform Jews keep Kosher. (Though, personally, I don't. That's one thing that's great, yet sometimes maddening, about Judaism. We're all entitled to our opinion about the interpretation of the religion, and we always use the opportunity to do so -- and sometimes we even voice MORE than one opinion!)

No problem Dizknee_Phreek. I'm always open to sharing my religion with other people. I mean, I am going to school in the NC mountains.

I'm not Jewish, but the corned beef sounds pretty good. You don't have to be Jewish to order from this menu do you? Stupid question I know.
