D5100 Took a Dive

I put my D5100 in a place I should not have and it was knocked off. After a 5 foot fall I try to take a pic and only get partial shutter movement with an error message to press the shutter button again. Is it worth a trip to Nikon for a repair or should I try for a new 5100 body or upgrade to a D7000? If I opt for a new body, I am willing to crack open my busted camera and play with the little red gear I have read about that is the root of the error.

Ouch! I am not sure how much it would cost to get it fixed but if getting the D7000 is affordable I would go that route. Then if you decide to crack open the 5100 and you can not fix it there is no loss. From what I hear the D7000 is a fantastic body and would be a good step up from the 5100. Never the less it just plain sucks that the camera was so depressed that it had to jump....LOL I would be interested to hear which way you go and how you make out.

Since my initial post I decided that I really didn't have anything to lose. :) The shutter curtain got erjawed in the fall I guess and had a bit of a wrinkle where it could not open all the way. Only opening about a quarter of the way. With the mirror up out of the way I did the best thing I could think of... I stuck my finger down in there and got it back where it belonged. Its now taking pictures again and I don't really see any boogers on the image from my finger being in a place it shouldnt be. :D

BTW... I have a Rapid RS4 strap and because of that my camera does not sit flat on its base. Cat was being nuts the other night, hit what my camera was on and it went flying. My fault for not putting it in a better place.

Lucky it was an easy fix. Glad to hear it. I would have blamed the cat and insisted I had to get a new camera.....Hmmm that gives me an idea.

No, I am quite sure he is right. Now I just need to find a way to have mine break....maybe give it to the 3 year old grandchild to play with for a while.....Hmmmm

We are in the process of building a new house on 10 acres in the country and my 30x50 workshop was just completed as well as a tractor purchase. I'm not gonna push my luck with buying a new camera if I don't have to. I don't want to have to live in that new workshop. Its cold. :)

5100 and 7000 have the same sensor....

and don't bother getting it fixed, they'll rake you over the coals

edit: didn't read all the way through, glad you were able to fix it easily!
