I love my job at TDS! I've been a CM for five years between TDS and WDW and love and adore the company! I have two wonderful Disney families that I treasure.
The pay - not that great, but it will make up in experience. Trust me.
If worse comes to worse, and you hate TDS, you can always leave and go back to your other job (as long as it's still available).
For getting your foot in the door...let's put it this way. I have five years in with the company between WDW and TDS, but it doesn't count anywhere. I had to term myself from TDS since I went on CP...but I do know that you can transfer your years from TDS to WDW if you do it the right way. I would try to talk to the person interviewing you for TDS about this.

I like working at the Disney Store, but I guess it could really depend on who your managers are.
They may want to pay you less money to start, but you do get great benefits (discounts...)

I began my Disney career at Disney Store, PT manager. Loved it. They pay will be lower than your current job most likely, just a warning.

is the job pay plus commission (with the pay being less than minimum wage) or is it a flat pay rate? if so how much is typical?

It's a flat pay rate. I got $5.25/hr, but it was/is my first job and I'm doing it far more for the experience than anything else. Also, it's great to say "I work for Disney!" [in an incredibly perky voice, of course.
