CR ratings?

What do you think about the ratings and reviews that Consumer reports does?

I've always tended to lean more towards experts in a specific field... I feel those reports are always very generic, but they also tend to mirror the same types of reviews gear gets from photography specific media.

The reason I ask is, my wife just decided she wants a new p+s for our upcoming trip. She wants to spend about $200.00. I subscribe to CR and she thinks that they are the cats meow. The most recent edition showed up the day after she told me this and of course cameras are reviewed in this issue. Anyone?

There are a few p&s's out there that shine above the rest, but at the $200 mark they will all be basically the same. Not to say there aren't quality cameras for $200, just that the difference in a $200 Canon vs. $200 Nikon will be slim at best. Or that the difference between a $175 Canon vs. $200 Canon will be slim as well. Figure out if there are any features that really matter (face detection, image stabilization, more zoom, etc.) and go from there. Personally, I would think CR would have decent reviews on the types of camera you will be looking at, they tend to fall short in the higher end cameras, but probably because they are really "consumer" cameras.

There are also TONS of websites that compare cameras and only cameras.
