Could Disney be taking over Camp Snoopy?

Camp Snoopy, the small, indoor amusement park located inside the Mall of America (the mall is actually the most visited place in the US) has been operated by Cedar Fair since CF took over Knott's in the mid-90's. CF has recently announced that The Mall of America has ended the relationship, and CF will no longer manage the park.

Curiously, WDC is holding its shareholder meeting in Minneapolis this year.

Something to think about, especially since WDC announced last year that it will be looking at more "weekend" concepts.

Also, what better way to market the warm-weather parks, than to "give a little taste" of what Disney has to offer in the frozen people in the north.

Damn....well, it was a thought.

I wonder if they could operate under a licensing agreement....Snoopy is not too popular anymore, especially since it is no longer produced.

Oh shucks! I read that first post and got a little ecited to be shot down. I hope at least the new management gets rid of the gum wall on the log ride and clean up the place in general.

Not sure I agree with you on this one, Speck. Peanuts still runs in many newspapers across the country. Granted they are classic strips, but many generations are experiencing Snoopy for the first time.

The Peanuts gang may no longer be on Saturday morning TV, but there are still the holiday specials and there are new specials in the works. Last summer one debuted on ABC.

Snoopy is by no means as popular as the mouse, but I think he still has a strong following and it will remain that way.

Thread drift:

Actually, Snoopy is immensely popular. For the last two years, Target had exclusive Peanuts-themed playsets, and they sold out quickly. Hallmark features more Peanuts cards than Disney (if you don't believe me, check out your nearest Gold Crown store--and by the way, the Snoopy cards have better verses than the Disney ones, too). "Merry Christmas, Charlie Brown" is one of the most-watched Christmas specials on TV; last year, ABC didn't even show "Mickey's Christmas Carol"! Finally, Peanuts remains the most popular comic strip in papers.

As a graphic designer, I read a lot of advertising statistical info that most people don't know about. Believe it or not, in the late 70s and early 80s, Snoopy merchandise was more popular than Mickey Mouse!

Of course, the Mouse is more popular today. But most people still love Snoopy, including die-hard Disney fans. After all, the strip regularly referenced Mickey (as Spike's good friend).

Not quite. The peanuts gang were originally licensed by Charles Schultz to Knott's Berry Farm, in Buena Park CA (just down the road from Disneyland), which created the first Camp Snoopy in that park in 1983. The "Camp Snoopy" at MOA was originally named "Knott's Camp Snoopy" when it opened in 1992, and I believe Knott's managed the property. When Cedar Fair bought Knott's in the late 90's, they inherited the management contract.

That is correct. Camp Snoopy can now be found at many of the Cedar Fair parks.
