My sister had a cough from October last year til April this year.
I am hoping it doesn't happen again.
It sucked for her and for the rest of us that were around her lol.
And it wasn't postnasal drip. It was a dry cough and even her ENT couldn't figure it out.

Wife has had it for weeks after a chest cold--- gave it to me last week now I have a touch of pneumonia (per doc visit yesterday) not looking forward to the lingering cough and post nasal drip

Glad you consulted with your dr. -- pneumonia can be serious. Just follow the physician's guidelines (I'm sure you are). Hopefully, you only have a lesser, earlier stage of it and can get enough rest, etc. Also, drinking a lot of fluids (water in particular) may be helpful to knock it out of your system. (Side note: recently, my dr. suggested the pneumonia vaccine. First time I ever had it. Only time I had full-blown pneumonia was when I was 3 years old -- very scary situation.)

Docs got me on a antibiotic, cough medicine with codeine so I can sleep, cough so much my chest muscles hurt. All most 2 weeks of this feel better today coughing up less junk. Wife is a retired nurse forced me to the doctor good thing as I hate going to doctors. Had the vaccine also

omg - happens EVERY time i get a cold. I'm all over it in 24 hrs with a cough that lingers MONTHS after. Here's another reason why this happens: doc said some people who don't normally have asthma can develop a temporary version of it after getting a cold - it settles in the chest and is a bear to get rid of. Not much you can do but wait it out, other than try symptom relievers like inhalers, steam, etc. Antibiotics don't make sense, as it's not an infection - literally nothing you can take to hasten recovery.

You're right that antibiotics are not appropriate...they would not help as you already stated.
Yet if you open the link I put at the top of the thread I think you might back away a bit from your closing statement that there is "literally nothing you can take to hasten recovery".
Taking an antihistamine, using a Sinus RINSE and increasing your fluids can help.
I'll look for something to post on the sinus rinse. I'll be back.....

Here is a 54 second video on using Neilmed Sinus Rinse.

That strikes me as the closest one comes to drowning without actually dying. I would rather use Sudafed and/or nasal spray. It has been a few years since I purchased any Sudafed and has been at least 4 years since I last had a cold. I have a cough but that is the residue of 40 years of smoking. Even then it has been a long time since I smoked but my adventures had a carry over in the form of COPD which does cause me to cough moderately with no warning. The last time I bought Sudafed you had to practically go through an FBI interrogation to buy it. It is used to make something else, don't recall what now. I'd look it up, but it really isn't important to the discussion.

Thanks for your post - and going to the trouble of posting the video:) Unfortunately, I've tried all this and more. Bad incessant cough still lingers for 2-3 months. Get checked out and nothing is wrong - it always goes away eventually. I have no proof, but suspect it's the result of breathing secondhand smoke for many years as a child. My parents smoked when I was a kid, long before anyone knew the risks of secondhand smoke - and in enclosed spaces like a car, I have to believe that takes a toll on tiny lungs. They both quit and felt terrible when they learned about the dangers after the fact, but I think the damage was done.

Seem to remember reading generally your immune system takes 7-10 days to fully kick in when you have an infection. I think doctors prescribe antibiotics routinely to cover any secondary bacterial infections if you have a viral infection and to cover there butts just in case. I agree it's a real hassle to get Sudafed any more.

Ever have a cough that sticks around a couple of weeks after you are healthy?
Here's a site I just discovered.

www.healthline.com/health-news/why-am-i-still-coughing

I suggest a site that has modern medical information. It recommended the common cough suppressant, dextromethorphan.

Oops...

The primary use of is as a cough suppressant, for the temporary relief of cough caused by minor throat and bronchial irritation (such as commonly accompanies the flu and common cold), as well as those resulting from inhaled particle irritants. However, controlled studies have found the symptomatic effectiveness of dextromethorphan similar to placebo.

IF you have a cough caused by a TICKLE in the throat....and you are not actually sick...but have post nasal drip that causes a tickle which then causes a cough....antihistamine and Nasal Rinse might be helpful. That's what I got out of that link. I certainly skimmed it and I am not familiar with or promoting all that was stated.

I just want to share that I am still coughing at times. Sometimes I have to excuse myself and get to a sink and ...well... you know. I'm disappointed that my prediction of taking a daily allergy pill in conjunction with doing a Sinus Rinse now and then did NOT resolve the problem by now.
