fans are cheap and you can get one at most computer stores. go to best buy and I believe they will install it for you if you are not sure how. since you said an intel desktop program warned of the problem, you are in luck. intel processors will slow down or shut down to keep from overheating and toasting them. if you had an amd, you probably would be buying a new processor. they don't handle heat extremes and can go up in flames if a fan goes out. (or at least they used to, haven't checked the reviews lately. tom's hardware had a great video a while back that really made up my mind to stick with intel.)

sorry for the lack of caps, i'm on my laptop and can't type worth crap!

It may just have been dust clogging the fan up. There not a lot you can do to stop it getting into the case - there has to be ventilation, and over time dust will build up.

If after it's cleand up you still get the messages just replace the fan. You should find that there is a power lead running from it to the main mother board, from where you can just unplug it. You may need to undo a few screws to remove the fan itself. Take it to Best Buy, or other computer store and they will be able to supply you with a replacement, then just reverse the process you used to take it out.

Or ask Best Buy how much they charge to do it for you. (In the UK they charge stupid money just to take the back off, which is why I DIY it, but things may be more reasonable your side of the The Pond).

Barnum's right. Changing a fan is truly not that difficult. If you get the message again (now that you cleaned it), I would suggest purchasing a new fan.

Maybe your friend can screw it in for ya.

Or you could always drop a ton of money for a liquid cooling system;)
