College Program Questions

I have a few questions that might be kinda silly to ask, so here it goes.

Do you have to pay for anything for the College Program? I realize you have to pay for your own belongings, clothes, cars, food, etc. (And whatever you bring with you). And I know you work 30-45 hrs per week at specific locations at WDW, but out all of the web pages I have been to, I have yet to see anything regarding cost of classes (tuition), a down payment for the College Program, rent costs and other expenses. I can't imagine this being a free ride. I mean you get beautiful housing (including pool, computer labs), park passes. It just doesn't add up. Maybe I am losing my mind! :)

I think I have seen this question answered some place else, but if you don't make it in the first time around, can you re-apply?

I know this has been answered before, but I´m too lazy to do a search...

I´ll tell you what I know about it. I didn´t do it as I´m not eligible for that, but I did do the Fellowship Ambassador International Program (RIP).

As far as I remember, you don´t have to pay for your time in the College Program. You do pay rent, but it is deducted from your paycheck, so you don´t really see it. Rent varies depending on the number of people in your apt. In 99, rent was either $65 or $77 a week.

Classes.... as far as I know, they are a requirement, but they don´t cost you. If you fail to attend the 80% or so of them, you will be terminated. There are also other courses at Disney University that are different from your required seminars at the College Program, and have a tuition to enter them. Those are for instance, Language courses, Tourism, etc.

I´m not sure of how it works in terms of your transportation expenses to get there from your hometown. At the program I attended, we were refunded those, but at the end of your program, so you would supposedly use that money to go back home. So... I´m guessing you will also pay for your roundtrip transportation.

Hope this helps. :animwink:

Things you need to pay for:
your own belongings, clothes, cars, food, apt ( $65-$77 ish each week, deducted from your paycheck automatically ), Leadership seminars and other courses ($ for books may be needed).

Free and Optional:
7 Core buisiness Seminars(tuition) are free and are not required when I was down there. As for electricity/water/tv and other stuff they're included in your rent to jack up the ac as high as you want and leave all the tvs and radios as long as you want. You're paying for it :)

As for the housing (including pool, computer lab), don't set your hopes too high. After hearing the stories about those pools you'll want to think twice about jumping in. And the PC labs...if you have a laptop, BRING IT. The lab is slow and there's usually a wait to get on.

The college program has been revamped in the past couple of years so make sure you listen to what everyone's got to say. I was down there in Fall 2000. And in '01 I heard of other new changes too. If anything, you can pm turkeylegboy (Campus Rep) and he can fill you in on all the details. He should know for sure.

Rent (2001-2002):

$67 for 3&4 bedrooms
$79 for 1&2 bedrooms

Rent is deducted from paychecks. 2 Weeks come out of your 2nd or 3rd paycheck.

I believe deposit was a total of $60. It was non-refundable and paid with money order or something else (not cash or checks) and was due when you checked in. (I've heard rumors about they have to be mailed now, but I haven't confirmed this).

Classes:

Are optional, tuition is free, but any books required for the classes are sold at wholesale costs and are taken from paychecks.

Misc:

Transportation is provided in the terms of buses, but if you have a car you should take it. Transportation to parks as well as certain buses at certain times to wal-mart, grocery store.

Computer lab at Vista Way (about 30 computers) wasn't that bad, usually could get on whenever. Chatham (10) was terrible.

I have a website that hasn't been updated in months, but it has pictures of housing on it and some information. I am also a campus reprensentative. If you have any questions, either Private Message (PM) me or email me. My email is on my profile, just put something about "college program" in the subject.

when I was on the program you was supposed to mail in the 60 non-refundable housing fee.

Bring a car so you don't have to wait up to an hour and a half for a bus to come and get you.

The busses really aren't so bad. They stick to their schedule pretty well and most area managers will be willing to adjust your schedule to mesh with the bus schedule.

I lived a Vista Way for over a month with no car (thanks to an accident on 536) and got around just fine. There is plenty of stuff within close walking distance like Wendy's and a drug store. If you are feeling extra energetic the Crossroads is only a couple of miles away, and if you are feeling SUPER energetic from there you can walk down Hotel Plaza Blvd to DTD. It is a really nice walk, Reedy Creek has a cool looking building there.

Of course, there will always be friends and roommates to give you lifts.

....or do what I did: rent a car when you really need it!

I survived without a car for 12 months (the following three I had my bf´s extra car but rarely used it).

To go to the parks and to work, you can live with the transportation provided... it´s on your days off when you want to go away from Disney property when you will need it the most. There is always someone who has a car and will be willing to give u a ride to Walmart at different hours than the shuttles, and so on... :animwink:
