Closing of the Parks

Today at Pop Century, rumors were that AK had reached capacity and was at level 3, letting only resort guests in. This was by 1 pm.

I was at AK today from 9am to about 1pm. When I left it was around 1:15pm, and there were still about 8 rows of parking left. There was a 10 minute wait for the maharajah trek. A wait for a walk-through! That surprised me. As we headed over to MGM we noticed that those little road signs that have park names with arrows next to them (that show which direction they are) actually change. Next to Magic Kingdom.. it said "Full". Scary. It was nice that MGM was open until 10pm though! :)

MK and DAK filled up. Tomorrow i would not be suprised if MGM closed as well. As for what phase, well my dept. isnt told those lovely things.

Traditionally the overflow guests are directed to Epcot. That has the largest capacity for guests while DAK appears to have the smallest. Exactly what those numbers are, i dunno; theyre a closely guarded secret and even if i knew, i like my job too much to risk it. I know it takes a boatload of people to be inside before the parks close.

Once again, best advice is to show up early and stay all day, and to be patient.

I've never been to the parks when they are at capacity, but have a question.

If you have a park hopper, or annual pass, and say you started out in the magic kingdom in the a.m., then say, park hopped over to Epcot for a bit, and wanted to go back to the magic kingdom, however, mk was at capacity, would you be turned away at the turnstiles, or since you have a park hopper, or annual, would they let you in?

Just curious on how that works.

The Parks close in phases. Phase 1 is normal (Like everyday)
2 is only guests holding multi day tickets or resort guests. No tickets are sold at the gate... well, if someone has a muti day ticket in your party, you can park at the park, and then buy tickets at the gate for the rest of your group... well, usually you can.
3 is Resort Guests with multi day tickets only... well, not quite. Phase 3 was created because of parking lot compacity. So, if you have an annual pass, and you want to go to Magic Kingdom, but the park is at level 3, you could go over to Epcot and park, then take the monorail over to the MK and you could easilly get in.
And Phase 4 is only Company Execs. Rarely will it stay at Phase 4 for a long period of time, as guests are always leaving the park as well.

And finally, the "Full" signs on the WDW Resort Parks Signs refer to parking compacity. Not park compacity. ;)

So, in conclusion, to answer your question, generally it would depend how you got to MK. Monorail would allow you to go in, parking would not. (Assuming we're at level 3 at MK)

Thanks for the reply.

That is very interesting to know!

I have never been there when things have been that busy, but, someday, I might !

Thanks again.

Well, I'm very sorry for all those Guests who were there trying to have fun, but that's really wonderful news for the parks. Hopefully, things will only get better from here on.

Are you kidding me!? hehehehe This is just the start. Yesterday was the busiest at EPCOT, and I am guessing that's it is going to get a whole lot busier! Though, I'm taking my sis to MK on Thursday, hopefully they'll let me in at 8....:-/

.

This is nothing new to "this year" as last year and the year before on the exact same week (and the next week) it was the same way. Parks were being closed due to capacity.

It was miserable. You couldnt even walk down main street because of the crowds.

Wow, I've never been to WDW during Easter week. I would have expected it to be busy, but I had no idea just how busy it gets. Kind of scary because we almost planned our trip for this very week (because the weather is supposed to be so great). Ultimately, we decided to go first week of May.

We're leaving tomorrow and coming back Saturday. My parents are the kind who like to take their time and think the parks will roll out red carpets to them (we just made reservations on saturday)......I'm scared...:lookaroun

Here is what I have heard about park capacities. Not sure how accurate they are:

MK phased closing begins at around 65,000

Epcot phased closing begins at around 80,000

Studios phased closing begins at around 45,000

DAK phased closing begins at around 50,000

Blizzard phased closing begins at around 7500

Typhoon phased closing begins at around 6500

Actually the MK I know is a little short, well alot short.

The MK closes at 90,000. When they closed last year at the same time they had 93,000 in MK before they closed it. It was only in the 90's for less than an hour however, but I know those are the numbers as I have a great friend in administrative offices there.

DAK is a much smaller number. We hit Phase 3 at approx. 37-38 thousand.

Yesterday we did have over 38,000 in the park.

Parade is even more crowded today than yesterday, so I think we may have passed that today. :dazzle:

Have fun! My family is just like that... we make reservations spur of the moment, and somehow, there is always a room for us somewhere. I hope I can go next week, since that is when my spring break is.

To comment on the park capacity thing, my family and I were in WDW for New Years weekend one year, and EPCOT reached capacity at 9:30 in the morning, we were so bummed (we got there at like 9:45). That weekend, the parks were the busiest I have EVER seen them... It was like total chaos, there was no walking room, the lines were sooooo long for attractions, it was mayhem.

I was at WDW during Easter week of 1998 and it was miserable. I would never go during that time of year again. I'll stick to early May and September from now on.

That is exactly why the two weeks around Easter have traditionally been the absolute busiest weeks, along with the week after Christmas.

School is out for a week nationwide, and the weather is ripe for a family "Spring Break" trip to Florida... so everything leads to a crowd at Walt Disney World.
