Christmas day parade filming

Hi, DH,DS and myself are taking a trip next December. Our tentative dates are the 4th to the 11th. Historically the Saturday is the last date for filming of the parade. My first thought is to add an extra day and be there on the 3rd (the Friday). I've read though that its not so magical when you're standing around for hours and hours waiting for different parts of the parade. Could some one shed some light on the Saturday during filming? We are going to take advantage of the 40% pin code we received and stay at AKL (we normally stay at ASSp) This will be our 5th trip to WDW and am trying to do something new (we have been at this time before and enjoyed the MVMCP)...Thanks for your help!

Basically true. For this year's filming, it began at 11:30am but still have not concluded by 5pm.

Otherwise, the day we went, the rides were less crowded and you get to see the celebrities/performers numerous times. :)

We were at MK the Sunday this year that they did the majority of the taping for the Christmas Parade. We got there when the park opened and we could walk down most of main street and they were rehearsing the crowd for the Jonas Brothers. The rides were pretty empty until around noon (when we left). We were in Frontierland around 10:30/11 when they started running the floats down for the parade. The taping didn't bother us except that a lot of the hub was closed off, benches and the partners statue was covered and we couldn't see the big tree or the garland on Main Street (it was down for the parade). It wasn't a big deal for us though.

When you were there on the Saturday, it was originally supposed to be the day they taped the parade but they actually moved the taping to the next day (Sunday) and what you witnessed was the taping of the 'talent' that was supposed to have been filmed the day prior on Friday but had to be postponed due to the torrential DOWNPOUR that never let up all day long.

Traditionally they tape the 'talent' segments on Thursday and Friday so this mainly ties up the Castle Forecourt Stage area but not the rest of the park or Main Street too much. The main parade taping generally takes place on Saturday and this ties up Main Street for the vast majority of the day.

It's usually done of the first weekend in December. We like to travel down at this time but we tend to make sure we're out of MK for the day of the actual parade taping. We were supposed to be at MK on the Sunday this year but when we found out they'd postponed the taping to Sunday from a CM at the Poly, we went to Epcot instead before hitting MK for the party that night.

Thanks for your replies. I'm still trying to figure out if adding an extra day is worth it. As I said we love the televised version of the parade, but am afraid that by some accounts seeing it live may take some of the magic out of it.... We have never booked this far out before and I think I am overthinking every aspect of our trip. DS will be 12 and I fear that this Disney trip may be the last he gets really excited about for a few years anyways

If you're willing to stand in the same spot for hours on end as they move the same float back and forth a gazillion times to take it from multiple camera angles, then the parade taping is for you. We opt not be anywhere near MK on those days as it just gets clogged up by all the camera crews and extra people.
