Christmas at Disney

We went to Disney World for Christmas in 2007 and were surprised to discover it is one of their busiest days. We had assumed most Americans would be at home celebrating the season with their families. We still had a great time but the Magic Kingdom on Christmas Day is a happy sort of chaos. No idea what it is like nowadays (blimey it's 8 years since we went!!!).

Christmas week is the busiest week of the year at the parks. MK will close due to reaching capacity on multiple days during the week.

We found that the only thing that is really good to do on Christmas day vacation wise is to travel. Airports seem much less crowded on Christmas than any other time of the year... I guess because most people are standing in line at Disney that day.

I did it back in 2012 and I had a blast. Busy, yes, but manageable. Take advantage of those early morning EMH at MK that week; we were walking right on to rides up until about noon. (Admittedly, the weather helped a bit; no one wants to get on Splash Mountain when it hasn't even reached 50 degrees out yet.)

It's a great time of year to go - IF you plan ahead and IF you manage expectations and rely on early mornings, Fastpasses, and dining reservations strategically. My family went last year and had a blast - did everything we usually do and then some. But that was because I knew from research what to expect and planned to the hilt. My brother and I were talking about this the other day and he said if it hadn't been for me taking all that planning in hand, there isn't a chance in hell he'd go then, because he wouldn't even know where to start. And we saw plenty of families clearly on their first trip to WDW utterly bewildered and miserable because they expected everything to be empty.

They technically are spending time with their family, they just aren't at home doing stuff. I stopped getting surprised by how many people actually go out on some holidays. To give you an example, my mom works at a restaurant as a cook and every Thanksgiving is packed with people going out to eat. I guess people just don't want to cook turkeys anymore.

I'd love to see Disney during the holiday season, but possibly not on Christmas Day itself.

We were there the week before Thanksgiving, and most of the Christmas stuff was up by the time we left (we flew home on the 21st). There were gradual additions to the level of decor throughout the week, for example, the EPCOT tree was added later in the week because it was in the spot where a Food and Wine topiary was, since it was ending while we were there. Wreaths and poinsettias were around and Goofy was doing meet and greets as Santa in both AK and HS.

they also had Christmas music playing throughout the parks. It was a nice time to be there.
