Changing Hotels? Non-Refundable Rates?

Hello,

I'm pretty new to this board. I'm planning a surprise trip to WDW Dec 26th-29th for my wife and I. Celebrating our 5-year anniversary! Anyway, I booked airfare and I made reservations at the Wydham Palace Resort. I got a deal at 89.00 dollars a night EXCEPT, it is supposed to be non-refundable.

After, doing an extensive amount of reading, I want to change to the Polynesian Resort. I know the Wyndham is supposed to be nice, but considering the holiday crowds, using the bus system may not be a good idea. We only have really 3 full days we can spend in the parks, and I would rather spend the extra money to be on the Monorail.

Is there a way to cancel my reservation at the Wydham without getting screwed? Any Advice? Should I just chance it and stay at the Wydham. I have not been to Disney in 10 years, and I remember the convience of going in and out of the parks at will using the Monorail & Launches.

Advice?

Did you book a package or was it just a room only reservation? If it was room only you can go to Wyndam's website and find the rules for cancelling the reservation - But first I would do two things: 1. call disney and have them hold a 24-hour reservation (or as long as possible) just so that you have something to change to. 2. call the person you booked the trip with and explain that you need to cancel and are wondering about the charges... I book hotels all day long and have never had a problem canceling within 24 hours as long as it was not a package. Give it a shot first before you give up hope!

I don't know about caceling, but I think Poly would be the way to go. So romantic and great being that close. However for that week it is going to be pretty pricey, if they aren't already full. Can't hurt to call and try.

Is there a deposite that's non-refundable, or the whole amount? Some places say you must pay for one night if you cancell within one-two weeks or something like that. I'd call up and ask them personally, saying you might have to change your trip, ask them about it. If they say you can't get your money back (some, not all) then just say you'll stay. If not, cancell and go the Poly.

Good ideas all. You should probably try the website first, to check any reservation refund rules. www.Wyndham.com.

And I'm sure the call will get mighty interesting, just rest assured that the Wyndham Palace can compete with any Disney resort in terms of amenities. The dining options are unbelievable, and it offers three full, tropical-themed swimming pools. I also hear that the rooms are quite large.

Though the bus service definitely leaves something to be desired, it should be bearable if you just travel to the parks and not to another resort.

The first thing to do is check with Disney to see if you can even get a room at the Poly. That's a real busy week and if there are no room available, you'll have to stay at the Wyndam, and the refund will be a mute point.

$89 seems very low, but WP is famous for charging much less than the market allows....poor, poor management!

If the rate is like an Advance Purchase rate, you are not going to get your money back. If you agreed to "pay now for a low low rate", and you are not holding up your end of the deal, they will charge you, as they should.

If you booked though Expedia/Hotels.com/Priceline/Hotwire, you will have to take it up with them. The only way to get your money back is to "have a death in the family"....these companies are not very flexible.

Update:

Yes, I was not able to cancel my reservation. Although, the Wyndham is supposed to be one of the better resorts in Downtown Disney. I discovered it was first on the bus route. (Thanks to this forum) So maybe everything will be fine.

I guess staying at the Poly will just give me another reason to make a future trip to Disney World!
