I've heard of rental car companies having specials that include a free car seat during the rental period. Does anyone know if any companies are known for this because I haven't been able to find anything? We'll be going the in the middle of December.

While I've rented from several companies whose Web sites claim car seats are available with your rental (Enterprise is coming to mind), none of the rental locations ever seem to have any on hand. You can always call ahead to inquire.

A side note on this...I found a number of places that strongly discourage people from using free car seats offered by rental car agencies. I wish I had the links to the various warnings and articles, but the issues...1) apparently many rental car companies are known to keep car seats in use after they've been involved in serious accidents in rental cars 2) the car seats are often older models and are at a stage where they should be replaced 3) they are lesser models with less than favorable safety ratings.

For peace of mind- we always travel with our car seats. Car seats are free in most cases as far as checked baggage policies go with airlines.

We rented a car last year and ended up getting car seats for free. I think the rental company was Enterprise but i'm not really sure. However, I think the lady was just being nice to us since we were horrified at the lack of car/booster seat/seat belt laws in FL. Just an FYI: FL law is children only need to be in car seats until, I believe, age 3 and then seat belts are fine for 4 and 5 year olds and nothing is required after that age by law. Booster seat laws are pretty much non existant. Here in RI and at that time we lived in VA, the booster seat laws are until age 8. So depending on your childs age they'll tell you that you don't need one.

We were able to rent a car for my SIL's wedding and since we are AAA members we got a car seat rental for free and they were running a special that if you booked with their suggested company and presented your card, you got 2 car seat rentals for free, which worked out well for our 3 kids, we only had to bring 1 seat from home. Now our October trip I am going to have to investigate what we can do since our kids are only 4 and 2 3/4 yrs old.
