The only things you can use the DDE discount for while on the Dining Plan would be any alcohol or extra food not covered by the Plan, such as appetizers or a bottle of wine.

I have used DDE to cover food that wasn't covered by DDP, but not tip [If you want to tip less on DDP, just tip less - there is no obligatory tip on DDP - just recommendations of what they think is appropriate]. The only reason I had both at the same time was free DDP last August while my DDE and AP were still valid. I wouldn't recommend DDP if you have APs and DDE otherwise as the purchase of a minimum one-day base ticket required by DDP makes it less of a value. We had a couple of occasions where we ordered extras and tried to use DDE for the discount on the part we were supposed to pay OOP and the CM just didn't charge the extra [one was a glow-cube drink at H&V, I think the CM was confused how to do it and decided it was easier not to charge for the drink ].

If you consume a lot of alcohol with dinners and in bars, it might still be worth carrying both. I don't drink much alcohol when I'm there with DS13 - no need to set that kind of example.

I'll be AP-less when we're on free DDP this August, so those little savings here and there won't be happening.

Yeah, we'll be there in September during Free Dining. I'll be upgrading my ticket to an Annual Pass while I'm there, and buying a DDE card (for the first time). It won't get much use on the September trip, just the random drink (it's good in the Rose & Crown Pub, too!) or appetizer with dinner, plus breakfasts in the Pop Century food court.

But I have a couple trips planned in 2009, at least one of which will be heavy on the Table Service meals. The 2009 trip will more than make up for the cost of the DDE membership, so why not get a little use out of it in September, too?
