The resorts are open for all to explore. You can shop, eat, hang out. My inlaws , who live in Florida, drove to WDW to meet us, parked at the resort for the day (they needed to stop at the security shack first and tell them they were meeting us...just needed to give our name), had breakfast with us and then we hit Epcot for a few hours. We let the front desk know the day before, just in case, but they said "no problem".
