Camera Issues

I just bought a DSLR for my upcoming trip in November. I am not sure which type of bag to buy to carry it around it the parks. I will also be carrying around a little point and shoot, my refillable mugs and a bunch of other stuff. Does anyone recommend a type of bag that will fit a lot and keep my camera safe, but also easy to pull out ASAP? Is it a real pain to even bring a backpack? Should I just stick with a little bag and a camera bag? Ahhh decisions decisions....

I would suggest a couple of options. It seems much of what you're carrying isn't camera related. And camera bags can get expensive fast. If you do go that route, probably a sling bag or a waist bag would be the most comfortable in the parks.

Otherwise go with whatever bag you feel good with and get an OpTech body cover which you can then just keep in your regular bag. Same for the P&S.

My primary suggestion would be to take a trip to B&H (midtwon Manhattan, west side). Probably the best camera store in the US. Being able to see what you're getting is the best way to buy a bag like this.

If you will have only one lens with it then you might not need a bag, which would jsut be something else to carry.
Just get a good comfortable neck strap like those made by Optek (see amazon.com and search on camera strap).
The straps that come with cameras are usually not so comfortable.

I just wear my camera around my neck. That way it's ready and I don't have to carry something else.

Tamrac makes a good quick access bag if you really need one. Look at the Velocity 6x or 7x.

Good luck.

Tamrac makes some good camera backpacks that you can also carry other items in. A good sling pack will also work and it can double as an item carrier as well. When touring the parks, I use the Tamrac Expedition 3, it's a compact backpack that will hold my DSLR, a 55-200mm lens, a point-n-shoot, and some filters. There is still room left for things like money, sunglasses, rain ponchos, etc. Plus the Expedition 3 is small enough to get on every ride with me. It has fit into every compartment, even the ones on Mission:Space and into the nosecone on Space Mountian.

I am extremely happy with my Domke Camera bag (
F-2 DOMKE'S ORIGINAL BAG/OLIVE.) For all the gear and extras that I carry it is perfect.

This summer we were traveling in Quebec City. We did a lot of walking and even more hills. The bag was quite comfortable to carry. It kept my gear dry as a bone when we were caught in torrential downpours and had to walk almost a mile back to the hotel. (Everything else was drenched)
