I just got a new Digital camera and have some ?'s for you all.

I was wondering does the Airport x-rays hurt the sd cards with pictures on them?

If I use the 7 Mp can I still print 4x6 pictures? Or must I use less like 3-4 Mp?

How many Mp's do I really need for a good picture?

How about Batteries in you carry on bag? Yes or no?
THANKS!

Ok, here are your answers in order:

Airport xrays have never hurt my cards before. Shouldn't be a problem.

A 7mp camera will give you beautiful 4x6 prints.

The higher the mp, the sharper the image.

Batteries in a carry on are no problem at all.

Whew, got through that with no problem.

Yes. You can print any size pictures from most every Mp. The higher the Mp, the higher the quality of the picture. It can be cropped or blown up and still look very good. For space on the SD Card, I would go with a 5 Mp setting and download them to a computer every night.

if it would be that easy .. it depends VERY much on the camera components (lens, imagers) and also on the photographer (light, focus, steadyness)

so a 10MP camera won't make professional poster photos just out itself :p

Correct. However tahts for domestic travelers. International travleres still will have any film fried as in Europe their xray machines are much more powerful.

A 3.2 MP camera will give you 4x6 resolution without a problem at 300 dpi. 7MP gives you (roughly) 8x10.

WRONG! The higher the megapixels, the higher the resolution - that has nothing to do with the shapness of the image. How sharp your image has mostly to do with your lens, depth of field and shutter speed and whether or not you can "freeze" the action.

Marketing departments for camera manufacturers have misled you. Its a myth that the MP output will somehow magically increase the quality of your photos - All it refers to is the output size. For the average person, you dont need a camera that uses more than 4 MPs; its overkill that wastes disc space.

Are you refering to standard film? Even domestic travelers can have their film easily damaged. Most of the screening machines don't just do a single scan. If you watch them, they move the bags back and forth under the xray. Your luggage is getting multiple doses. I always get my film hand checked.

I would think that a digital card that is within the camera would be shielded better and would not be subject to any damage.

Correct. X-rays are part of the electromagnetic spectrum (higher in frequency than light, but lower than gamma rays).

Memory cards, removable memory modules, MP3 players, etc are completely electronic. There are no magnetic heads, no magnetic tape, etc that would be affected by X-rays.

Correct - an x-ray can not affect your memory card at all. You have no choice as to the x-ray - they will NOT hand examine your camera - it must pass through the x-ray machine either in your carry on or in checked luggage. I travel weekly with my digital cameras and there are never any problems with x-rays here or in Europe. Now regular film is a different story. Not memory cards.

You can get great looking 8x10 from a 3MP camera....

I took a few 'sharp' pictures and sent the to Walmart to get 8x10 and was really surprised at the quailty.

I never had any problems with airport xrays

magnetical,elektrical or optical storage
(hdd's,dvtapes, regular photo films, memory cards) they all came out untouched out of every xray machine ..
