Camera Dilemma OH NOES!

I have used Ebay to buy cameras and lenses in the past. I would only recommend it if you are buying higher end items like DSLRs and associated lenses and flashes. If you are going to buy a point and shoot I wouldn't bother. In general the savings will not be that great on a point and shoot and the risk of there being a problem is still there... In general when I buy a camera or a lens on Ebay I ask myself if I can afford to throw the money away, if I can't answer yes then I wouldn't bid on it because there is a chance that you will end up with something other than what you thought you were getting and may or may not be able to return it.

OK. How much do you want to spend? Just on the camera and ignore the flash card and battery incidentals. Put the following in the order most important to you and we can provide some detailed guidance:
  1. Price
  2. Picture quality
  3. Ease of use
  4. Size/weight
  5. Features (anything special here?)
And realize you won't get all you want w/o spending several hundred dollars, especially picture quality relative to any other factor. I would suggest reading some of the archived threads here on people who have been in the same position. But no two people are alike with cameras in many cases. So your criteria are important to you.

Also, and I say this with respect to every other member, it's not the camera that takes the picture - it's the person holding the camera. If you take the time to learn whatever camera you end up with, you'll probably be happy with it. At some point, spending more money doesn't necessarily mean you'll take better shots.

OK. A C-Note. Not necessarily tough but . . .

First of all, I wouldn't recommend Best Buy unless you really like them. You will probably get a better deal from NewEgg.com. Within your price range there you have a choice of Kodak, Fujifilm, Olympus, and Nikon. You can't go wrong with any of those choices. And don't fret over minor differences, most of the cameras in this price range are all basically equivalent. BuyDig.com is also another reputable source. I buy a lot of electronics from both places and have never had a problem.

I would only say be very careful about eBay. Yes, there are deals to be had. And just about as many ripoffs, probably more of the latter. Especially when it comes to cameras.
