Calibrating a hygrometer

@TiggerDad brings up a topic that I've always wondered about, calibration of hygrometers and specifically digital hygrometers:
Me either. My problem is some days I forget to properly calibrate it first.

I wanted to take this discussion out of the Gondola thread lest it drive @The Mom crazy. :)

So my go-to digital hygrometer for the home is the Accu-Rite 01083M:

I've "calibrated" other hygrometers using the salt (sodium chloride) test and determining an adjustment factor. However, from comparing readings of different hygrometers under identical conditions, I've determined that the adjustment factor isn't a constant across all humidity levels. I've also calibrated these other hygrometers using a 100% saturation test (in the bathroom while taking a shower), as well as using potassium carbonate.

The Accu-Rite model above calibrates to within 1% Rh and is good across different levels.

I don't know what's going on with my other hygrometers.

What have your experiences been? All my friends think I'm crazy for being obsessed with humidity, so I was excited to see that I might have found an expert or at least a fellow aficionado.

Sorry, I have no actual knowledge of hygrometers, I was just making a stupid joke. I usually just use the weather.com app on my phone or if it’s Florida from May to September I step outside and it’s obvious the humidity is 100% ;)

Actually now that you posted the picture I see it’s a pretty small device that could easily be carried into a theme park. I was picturing @Phil12 setting up something like this in the parking lot:
