Okay, so here's my situation... I have Road Runner on my computer for almost 3 years now... Never really had any problems whatsoever.
Recently, Time Warner Cable became BrightHouse Networks... and suddenly, I have intermittant connection problems. What happens is my connection will die out anywhere from 30 seconds - 15 minutes... it happens sporatically.
I've called RoadRunner many times... they've sent a tech out to my apt to inspect the lines. They say my lines are fine. I've replaced my 3Com cable modem with a Toshiba cable modem. Still having issues.
The bigger problem that I am having is that the RR techs tell me that my Firewall is the problem. I use Zone Alarm as my firewall, and have had it for years with NO problems. (Note: XP firewall was disabled)... now all of a sudden they tell me that Zone Alarm is the source of my issues. So, I disabled it for a day. Still had connection issues. (they still told me that my Firewall was to blame, even though I unistalled it.) I was still having issues, and got tired of those damn Messenger Pop Ups... so I re-installed Zone Alarm. (BTW: I also supposedly disabled the popups, yet they still came through)
Now, some RR techs tell me "Nope, you don't need a firewall, your computer is completly safe from hackers. And if they REALLY wanted to get in, a firewall wouldn't stop them."
Others tell me "YES! You really do need a firewall, and it shouldn't impact your connection at all."
So can anyone tell me whats REALLY going on here??
