I can tell you that last year we got tired of waiting for Mears to get us to US/hard rock hotel so i took a cab and it was $40 for a family of 4 plus tip. By the time we got there we got into a room , had lunch and were heading to the boats for the park when the mears van got there. Worth the money for sure.

It depends a lot on what time you arrive. I've waited over 20 minutes for bags at the carousel at MCO, plus a 25-minute drive to WDW that comes to about the same as DME on a good day. DME has taken anywhere from 45 minutes to just over an hour for me any time I've used it. IMO 20 minutes to a half hour time savings in the worst case scenario isn't worth $40-50

If you are considering a cab, you might want to think about a town car service. About the same cost and you can count on the cleanliness and service. We're paying $130 plus tip round trip to the Animal Kingdom Lodge in December. When we went to Coronado I think is was $10 cheaper.

We use Quicksilver tours and they have always been very accomodating. Plus you get a free 30 min stop at a grocery store which can be very convenient when you don't rent a car.

I am not knocking magical express because it has its advantages too. We just prefer to have the private car.

I think like others have said that when you factor everything in the times can be a wash.

My own personal experience is that I have never waited more than 20 mins for my bags. Lucky I guess. So if you factor in that it may be 15 mins for DME to leave (it could be right away) and if I did not stop at the grocery store the town car could be faster. On the other side of things when you get to the resort if you have 5-10 other families getting off the bus at the same time you all are going to check in at the same time and someone has to be first and last in line. With the town car you could run into the situation where you are behind a large group or the only ones checking in at that moment.

In the end ask yourself which experience you would like more and can afford and go with that. The time is way too unpredictable.

If it's $40 to universal I'd estimate it would be more to WDW, especially if you are at one of the further resorts (MK resorts, AKL).

Only you can decide if $50 is worth 30-45 minutes of your time.

thanks for the help. do you actually "check in" at the airport before you take the shuttle? we have not received our "package info" from the travel agent yet, so i don't know if you are "assigned" a room before arrival or not.

also, we were told that it was just as easy to buy park tickets at the hotel when we arrive so we haven't purchased our tickets yet. have any of you just waited until you got to the park to get your tickets?

thanks again for the help!

You don't actually check in until you get to your hotel. You are basically assigned a room based on availability when you check in. If you are checking in early in the day your room may or may not be ready. If it is not they will give you a number to call to check.

Yes it is easy to buy tickets at the hotel or right at the park. You can possibly save a few bucks on the tickets if you buy them beforehand from AAA or Mapleleaf Tickets. Just be sure if you buy them beforehand that it is from an authorized reseller. You can find them listed on mousesavers-com or allears-net. Stay away from eBay and be careful. Disney is very unforgiving if you buy illegitamate tickets.
