Buzz Lightyear AA

I was looking at the AA in the Astro Blasters queue the other day and trying to figure out how it worked. I always thought there was just a projector in the wall but I realised there wasn't.

My theory is that he has a projector inside his chest which points up at a mirror at the back of his head. The image reflects off the mirror and onto his face.

Can anyone confirm this or tell me how it actually works?

It's all about lenses. Madame Leota has even less room than Buzz to work with.

The real trick in animating the face was knowing how the head was going to move around beforehand so that they could animate the shadows on his face to match the head movements to look like the shadows were happening because of the real-world lights around him.
