The opposite!

And I want BRITISH dvd's! I love British humor, and it seems like very few of your comedy movies are exported to the USA. Even watching the House of Commons on C-SPAN is fun, our govermental proceedings on the other hand, are soooo BORING!

There is no reason why anybody would not be allowed to buy DVDs. What are they doing - checking passports at the counter?

They may advise foreign people that Region 1 DVDs may not work in their country, but they would not refuse to sell them.

Anybody else heard of Disney refusing to make money?

Your friend is either pulling your leg or is telling you something that a friend of her uncle's next door neighbour's poodle's dog groomer's hairdresser was told by their friend's cousin who was told that their aunt heard it on the radio!

At most, a cast member may point out that you will need a DVD player that can play Region 2 discs for it to work in the UK.

We have never had problems buying DVD's from WDW, allthough we have noticed a few times that DVD's at WDW can be more expensive than any of the Wal Marts. You should check your closest one when you are over there.

Anything that goes through the TV usually isn't compatable from one country to the next.

I used to work at the DTD Virgin Megastore and we had to tell guests all the time that if their players back home wern't Multi-Region they would be wasting money.

Gosh, I turned away so much $$$ in DVD's and video games it's not funny.
But I never refused to sell someone something.

irv out.

Depends on the country...

The main things between UK and USA is that they do use different TV systems - how many lines make up the picture and how many frames per second. Also USA DVDs are region 1 and UK region 2 - the idea being that the studios can continue to rip of UK consumers by trying to make it so cheaper American DVDs won't play in UK players.

However you will find that most TVs in the UK can play the American TV signal and that most of the non-big brand DVD players can be tweaked via the remote control to play discs from all regions. :)

The ORIGINAL idea of producing DVDs in different regions was connected with the release dates of the cinema version - most cinema releases are premiered in the USA, therefore the corresponding DVD is released first in the USA, so by making DVDs regional a purchaser of the DVD (eg from the UK) couldn't take it home to Britain and watch it before the official UK version was released.
More recently, in connection with us Brits being ripped off by the equivalent film costibg us more - a direct comparison was done between regional variations of DVDs and. although the UK version was nearly always more expensive, it was because it actually contained more extras !!

Apart from Hitch Hikers, I've not found that to be the case. It's only in recent years that the extras over here caught up with the American releases.

US full price for a new DVD - $19.99.
UK full price for a new DVD - £19.99.

I'm assuming everyone has computers as this is an internet board. Would UK dvd payers/burners also be a different format? I play most of my dvd's through my computer,(which is hooked to my tv via graphics card) so it looks like I have dual monitors.

Depends on the player, some may let you switch between regions, others will only allow three changes before it locks down to the chosen region.
