Buying A New Camera

I am looking to buy a new digital camera. I've looked at everything from bridge camera's to the better point and shoot camera. I like the Nikon S600 and S610 and are leaning towards those but wanted to get some input from all of you on here with more knowledge than I have.

Thanks

I've been really pleased with my Olympus SP-570UZ. 10MP, 20X optical zoom and fairly comprehensive options in addition to its point and shoot automatic mode.

Hmmm. In that price range (~$225USD), pretty much any model you buy will be about the same. The only standout, from a quicky check, would be the Canon SD880IS if only for the IS feature. The nice thing about both, to me, is that they go to 28mm on the wide end. Great for scenics and ride shots. Neither has a far reach (110mm or so - and forget digital zoom).

I think the limitation here is your price range. Monty's 570 runs ~$375USD. If you could spring for that much you have many more options. Personally, I would normally suggest something with as large a sensor as possible (max image quality and PP flexibility) but those are hard to find in a P&S nowadays for under 400 (Canon G10 rules here).

What are your criteria? If one is "fit in a shirt pocket" go with the Nikon you spec or the Canon 880. If you don't mind carrying something, however small, around your neck, or in an extra small camera bag, the 570 wouldn't be bad. But I'd also suggest looking at the Canon SX10IS or a Nikon P80/P90. And don't forget to factor in costs for an extra bat and some mem cards in your total spend.

Thanks. Yeah I am replacing a point and shoot that is still in pretty good condition so price is limited. I found the Nikon S610 for 149 new US model. So i might go with that one for price. The more i thought about it i would prefer something pretty small to not have to carry an extra bag for around the World. Thanks the help guys.

I guess the biggest question I always have for someone who asks for advice is "What do you intend to use it for?"

Are you looking for vacation snapshots? Something all around? Really into photography? Or just something to get a few shots with?

I am going to be at WDW the entire first week in March so I want something I can captrure alot of shots with down there. I would say it will be used for taking pictures on vacation about 95% of the time. I really like photography but don't have much time to devote to using a DSLR, not that I have the money to purchase one anyway. I just would like to have a camera that i can easily take into the parks with me and take good shot with and put on a tri pod for nice fireworks shots and night pictures. The Image Stabilization for me is a must, bc i can't hold it still even during quick day shots.

I'd suggest checking out and comparing features and pricing on DPreview.com

Stick with Canon/Nikon and you'll be fine although there's a new waterproof/shockproof Olympus that i'd love to play with....

I don't want to put the OP off or sound negative but, if you can actually get the 610 for $149, that's a steal. Even the reliable places I know don't have it for under $190. I would just be very careful if you're doing mail order - TANSTAAFL. As you'll find on most photo boards "if it's too good to be true . . ."

Just sayin'.

Just recieved my Nikon S610 today. Ending up being 149 with 2 day shipping. Just ordered an 8 GB Sandisk SD memory card. Another other things I should purchase for the camera. Works great so far.
