So I just got back from a 4 day trip to the World! This was our fourth and last trip on our annual passes. We've done 3 other trips in the past 12 months, one in early December, one in March during Spring Break, and one in May, and this one was by far, the busies and most full I've seen the parks! I wasn't expecting that! However, like all the other Disney lovers here, I had obsessed and planned ahead of time and found that with proper planning, you can enjoy the parks no matter what the crowds are like!
So we left at 8am from Marco Island, FL this past Wednesday, October 12th. It was me, my husband, and our 7 year old daughter, Dakota. We took the scenic route through the center of the state and arrived in 3 1/2 hours at Wilderness Lodge! And even though it was before noon, they had our room ready! Yippee!!! We got a room with a queen bed and a bunk (which Dakota was sooooo excited about!)! They gave us one on the first floor, which at first concerned my husband, but it turned out to be so convenient! We were so close to the busses, the boat to Magic Kingdom, and overlooked the pool (which was only open till 9:30 pm so no problem sleep/noise wise)! The room looked great! Clean and nicely themed! We put our stuff down, quickly unpacked and then went to lunch at the quick service at the hotel - Roaring Fork. The Roaring Fork isn't as big as the quick services at Port Orleans or the All Stars, however, it still has a good selection! My husband ordered the pepperoni flat bread, but received the philly cheese steak flat bread. Rather than send it back, he decided to keep it and eat it and it was very good and filling! Dakota and I shared a tuna fish sandwich - Dakota's favorite! Then we shared a DELICIOUS carrot cake muffin!
We went back to the room and changed into our swimsuits for a swim! The pool water was actually quite cool to us wimpy South Floridians and it was an overcast day. We went on the slide several times and then Dakota played in the water play area for kids while my husband and I watched her from the hot tubs! After our swim, we got dressed for the evening and went to play in the arcade. Then it was time for dinner at Artist Point!!! My husband and I have eaten at Artist Point 2x before. Once about 3 years ago, and once about 15 years ago, and both times we loved it! Again, it didn't disappoint! The atmosphere there is so relaxing and calm and warm. Many tables overlook the trees and pool and we had a great view of the water and even the geyser (which goes off on the hour). Derek ordered a nice glass of cabernet. Then we all shared the Artisan Cheese Plate as an appetizer. It was so good and so fun! My daughter tried every cheese and really enjoyed it! They even had a real honey comb on the plate that made the cheese taste so good! What a treat! Then Derek got the Buffalo (Two thumbs up -tender and his favorite meal of the trip), I got the Sweet Potato Gnocci (also two thumbs up! Interesting tastes that all meshed very well together! It tasted exotic, yet still recognizable!), my daughter got the pasta with butter (always good according to Dakota). We were too full for dessert yet. So it was about 6pm when we caught the boat to Magic Kingdom!
What a wonderful perk to be able to take a boat to Magic Kingdom! We experienced the same thing at Fort Wilderness as well! It's so relaxing and magical to glide over Bay Lake and arrive to the docks, seeing the Castle in the distance. Also, we get to go by the shoe tree and the remnants of Discovery Island and River Country, and the water bridge over land bridge over water!
Anyways, we arrived at Magic Kingdom with big smiles on our faces in time for our first fast pass at Splash Mountain! My favorite ride at Magic Kingdom! I love the length and the thrill of the ride! We had a blast! Then went to our next fast pass at Barnstormer (one of Dakota's favorites!)! We noticed that the park seemed exceptionally busy and all the wait times were pretty substantial so while we waited for our final fast pass of the night (Dakota's beloved Seven Dwarf Mine Train (for me, it's just ok)), we went to the Mosters, Inc. Laugh Floor -always fun! Someday I'm determined to be on camera! Then I grabbed a root bear float from Auntie Gravity's (YUM!) on the way to walking to 7DMT! Also on the way, I popped into Star Traders and FINALLY found the pin I had been looked for all year - a Tommorowland Pin!!! I LOVED Tommorrowland the movie - to me it just embodied the optimism of Walt Disney and inspired me, so I've been dying for the pin and FINALLY, I found it! I raised my arms in victory to my husband (who was relieved that he didn't have to wait while I popped into every store for the rest of the trip)! We then rode 7DMT and then were all exhausted! As we were walking back, Wishes was starting and Derek was dismayed and worried about the crowds and getting back to our hotel. At this point it was 10:30 and we were all getting a little anxious to be in bed. Luckily, as we wove through Tomorrowland, we saw they had opened up the alternate exit behind the buildings of Main Street! Woohoo! Straight path back to the boat and to our hotel beds!
Day 2
We woke up at 5:45 am because today was Extra Magic Hours at Epcot! We got down to the Roaring Fork at 6:15am. Their regular breakfast doesn't open till 7am, but they have pastries and other goodies to pick up. We picked up a cheese danish and a bagel to share, along with a couple of bananas.
By 6:45 we were walking out to catch the bus to Epcot. I think we arrived around 7:30 and after they let us in, we walked to Soarin. We were one of the first people there and we loved the new Soarin! It was the same great ride with different smells and places! Fun!
We then headed to Finding Nemo to kills some time, even though we had a fast pass for it later in the morning. Next we hit Imagination. By the time we finished Imagination, it was time for our fast pass at Spaceship Earth (one of my favorites!!!!!!!!!!)! Next we went to the Short Films by Imagination. I just love the Buy a Horse one which takes you in and out of Black and White and Color in such a unique and creative way!! We then used our fast pass at Nemo. And then onto our fast pass at Test Track! (YAY! One of my husband's favorites!) We had finished our three fast passes at this point and so quickly snagged a fast pass for 4pm at Everest (which we all call "Yeti"). We then went to lunch at San Angel in Mexico. I had always admired the atmosphere of this restaurant and wanted to try it. But when we sat down I looked up to see my husband frowning and saying there was nothing he could eat there (he doesn't like spicy food). The waitress assured him that several dishes were not spicy and gave him options for putting sauces on the side. While like a toddler, he looked on the edge of declaring he would not eat in protest, I finally got him to order the chicken. *sigh. My daughter, who is 7, happily ordered the steak tacos, no sauce, and I got the steak tacos as well. She happily chowed down on the chips and gamely tried the sauces while my husband grumpily ate a few chips plain. Finally, when his meal came, he grudgingly admitted it was ok, and ate it. That's the last time I try Mexican with him ... even in a really cool atmosphere! I figured it would be ok since we eat tacos a couple of times a month. Oh well! But I enjoyed it and it was cool watching the ride! We quickly rode the boat ride in Mexico after lunch (what a delightful, easy ride in a full park!) and then headed back to our hotel. Epcot in the Future World, always feels very open and relaxing to me. But the World Showcase, by the time we got out of lunch especially, felt like a suffocating crush of people. It was during the food and wine fest and there looked like a lot of cool stands, but it was getting hot and very, very crowded. So we headed out. We got back to the room and grabbed cupcakes on the way, which we ate in bed while watching tv and resting =). Around 3pm we headed out to get the bus to Animal Kingdom.
When we got to Animal Kingdom, it seemed busy, but we headed straight to our fast pass for Yeti. But we were a little early for our fast pass, and it was 3 minutes till 4pm, so we decided to see the Finding Nemo show first. We had horrible seats but since we've seen it so many times, we just sat back and listened. Then to the Yeti! We love that ride - even Dakota! Although it does scramble your stomach a bit so I'm glad we did it before dinner! We had dinner reservations for the character dinner at Tusker House. The food was ok. Nothing spectacular since it's a buffet, except the beef was very good. But we all found things we liked and enjoyed it and got good pictures with the characters. After our Yeti fast pass we made a fast pass for the safari. So we headed over there after dinner. We were pleased to see the park thinning out at this point! We had a great time seeing the Safari at dusk and saw the male lion active for the first time! As soon as the Safari was done, we made a fast pass for the Kali River Rapids and we had a great time hooting and hollering through it! At this point, the park had completely thinned out and we strolled through and looked at the lit up tree of life, and then onto the exit. On the bus back, my husband and I were discussing how we had always gone to Animal Kingdom in the morning and had inevitably ended up hot and tired and grumpy (there are a lot more hills in that park that the others, in my opinion!) but this time we truly enjoyed Animal Kingdom in the evening and left with huge smiles on our faces!
Day 3
We again woke up bright and early at 5:45am in preparation for what we thought were Extra Magic Hours at Magic Kingdom at 8am. We quickly picked up some food at Roaring Fork (this time I got toast and hard boiled eggs). And then made our way to the boat to MK. And low and behold, the boat was right there waiting for us. It was still dark out on the way over. We arrived at Magic Kingdom right at 7am, thinking we were way early. But we went right through the gates! We asked if the rides were open and they said, yes, several rides in fantasy land and tomorrow land were open! Apparently Extra Magic Hours started at 7am since the park was closing early for the Halloween Party! Poor research on my part that I didn't realize that, but yay for being early! And really, to us, it was like magic!!!! I've never seen Magic Kingdom at 7am! It was so beautiful with almost empty streets, right after sun rise .. it was glowing with the fall decorations ... it just felt so magical!!! We nearly skipped over to fantasyland in awe at our good luck! Unfortunately 7DMT was already a 30 minute wait! (What?!) So we just decided not to waste our good time and luck on that and instead went to Peter Pan which was a walk on! Woo hoo!! That was the first time I saw the new que! How fun! And I do love that ride ... I'm just not waiting an hour for it! Then onto Small World. It was so funny! My daughter noticed that I was wearing my hard found Tomorrowland pin on my denim jacket and started freaking out, telling me to take my jacket off as we were walking toward the boat (no wait yet). I was confused at first till I remembered the Tomorrowland movie and that in small world the scanner found the pin and the boat went to Tomorrowland! She was scared of this happening and insisted I take my jacket off and put my pin in my backpack! I love that she still believes in the magic and my husband and I had fun pointing out the "scanner" to her and pretending like I was going to take the jacket out of my bag ... she was not amused, but we were! I told her it wasn't the real Tomorrowland pin since I bought it and didn't get gifted it by a robot, but she wasn't taking any chances! LOL!!!
Next we went to Little Mermaid, then Dumbo, then Barnstormer again. By this time the park opened and adventure and fronteirland was opening. So we headed to the Haunted Mansion, then Pirates of the Caribbean. Then onto the Tomorrowland Speedway. At this point, the crowds caught up to us. We waited about 20 minutes for the Speedway. So then we went to our old standby in crowds -the Peoplemover and the Carousel of Progress. I love both of these and love that we can go no matter what the crowd flow! So it was time for lunch at this point! I had reservations to the Liberty Tree Tavern, which I had always wanted to try. The atmosphere was more calm than the general park and the food was excellent! Derek had the traditional Thanksgiving dinner and I had a salad with chicken, cranberries, and apples that was yummy! Dakota again had the pasta with butter (but hey! If it works, it works!)! When we got out of lunch, all the wait times were out of control and we were done anyways so we headed back to the boat to our hotel! We were very proud of ourselves for accomplishing so much and had just had a great and magical morning!
At the hotel we went for a quick swim ... quick because it had started drizzling off and on and it was a little chilly (for us, I think anyone over the Mason-Dixon line would have looked at us with complete disgust!)! Then we got re-dressed and Dakota and Derek went to play in the arcade while I watched a couple of episodes of Friends and relaxed while eating a yummy scone from the Roaring Fork. Then we made our way to the bus for Hollywood Studios. My mom had arrived at All Star Music, had checked in and was also on the bus so we met her out front of HS. Dakota was so excited to take her Baba on Toy Story! We had a fast pass (thank goodness as we quickly saw the park was packed!)! We had a great time on Toy Story, as usual. Then we killed some time in the One Man's Dream exhibit before heading to dinner at 50s Prime Time!
What a fun experience! We had a to wait a while to get in because they were running about 20 minutes behind and we were 20 minutes early, but I loved how they called the names like they were calling their errant children to dinner. The hostess was even hula hooping with the children out front to pass the time! I love the decor of the place and we were seated in a cute little booth and enjoyed watching the clips of the reruns! Our waitress called herself "Mama" and was an adorable grandmother looking and talking type. She called us all sweetie and gently asked us to eat our vegetables. She was so cute! She airplaned the vegetables into one gentleman's mouth accross from us! I got the sampler with the fried chicken, pot roast and meat loaf, as did Derek. We both decided we liked the pot roast the best and would just get that next time, but enjoyed trying it all. My mom got the stuffed pork chop, which she said was very good! Dakota got the chicken fingers and seemed to like them. Derek loved the milkshake! And Dakota loved the sundae she got with her meal! Good times!
After dinner we all went to the Frozen show. I LOVE that show! We got different storytellers than the last few times so it was fun to see their variations and new jokes! After Frozen, my mom and Dakota went on the Great Movie Ride, which they had a fast pass to, while Derek and I got to go on Tower of Terror for the first time since before Dakota was born. Good think we had a fast pass because half of the ride wasn't working, so they had closed the ride to everyone but people who had a fast pass. Even with a fast pass, we had to wait about 40 minutes, but it was worth it! I had forgotten how much I like the theming on that ride! And the drop is fun too! After we met back up with my mom and Dakota my mom was wondering if we were watching the Star Wars fireworks, which were going to begin. My husband hates end of night crowds though, and we were all getting tired so we watched it as we headed to our respective busses. My sister was arriving in from Atlanta and my mom wanted to be in the hotel room to meet her anyways so we all called it an early night.
