Building My Own Disney

As children, my older brother and I used my family's basement and backyard to build our own versions of Disney rides for the younger kids in the neighborhood. We used a wagon as a ride vehicle, and made paths through the woods to simulate the riding of a rollercoaster such as Big Thunder Mountain. I know this probably sounds crazy to many of you, but I thought these boards would be the best place to ask if any other members did the same sort of thing growing up, or maybe even are still doing it now?

Dude don't trip....

I remember when I was 7 and after getting back from a trip to WDW I made my grandpa help me construct the Haunted Mansion Seance room in my grandma's dining room. She had a chandelier that I attached random objects (i can remember one of the items was a feather duster) from fishing wire and I used colored light bulbs in various lamps in to the room. I played spooky sound FX I had from Halloween and I even had a small crystal ball. I know, I know. . . corny! It was all out of love. Not to say i didn't retry this.

Three years ago my older sister asked for me to help her with a showcase in her high school. She's a biology teacher and has the largest showcase in the highschool. She wanted to come up with something killer for the first week of school. So i took a picture of Esmeralda from the Hunchback of Notre dame from a color book. It was a picture of her looking into a crystal ball. I re-drew this image and recolored her hair to match my sisters (she's a blonde). I then took a bunch of bio equipment and painted it in black light paint. I hung the beakers, test tubes, and mircroscopes from fishing line and changed the lights in the showcase to Black Lights. I covered most of the hall lighting near the showcase to darken the area. We then came up with a saying about biology that had a haunted mansion vibe. Then we took the students names and wrote them on stars and placed them throughout the showcase. It looked killer.

You're not alone in trying to recreate WDW rides!!!

Recreating Disney Attractions

My two favorite attractions were the Submarine Voyage and the Jungle Cruise. The Subs posed some serious obstacles to a Grade-Schooler, but I used to put all sorts of fake animals and rubber snakes around my parents pool and pull my little sister on a wake board while telling the jokes as best I could. The little water fall from the spa into the pool served as Schweizter Falls of course!
