Botanical Oddity at AK

If anyone is at AK in the next few days, there is a rare sight on display. On Discovery Island between Harambe and Asia, there is a plant called Amorphopallus titanum that is blooming. It is known as the world's biggest flower and can get up to 6' tall and 3' in diameter. It is tubor native to Sumatra and blooms rarely...I believe less than 20 times in the US since the first in 1937. It has a really horrible scent (a common name is Corpse Flower!) which will make things interesting in the park! A rare chance to see one of nature's oddest creations!

Cool, I wish I was there to check it out. Maybe someone can get a picture of it and some of us can see it that wont be able to check it out.

Go to MSN.com and they have a video of the "corpse flower" in the current news section.

Cool! As a budding (so to speak) botanist, I've always wanted to see one of these. Is it displayed in a way to contain the smell, or are the AK guests in for an olfactory onslaught?

The smell is not contained at all...it will be part of the "total entertainment experience" of AK...just like that *wonderful* smell in the bat house... :hurl:

I actually saw one of these in bloom at the Kew Royal Botanical Gardens just outside of London.

The smell is almost impossible to describe, but rotting flesh is close, and it is hard to believe that a plant could smell so bad.

I'm jsut waiting for a guest to complain about the smell thinking that AK is down wind from a garbage dump or something.

I can't seem to find this on MSN.com, if I could get a link to it or anywhere else that might have it.

It might say it in the artice, but where in Animal Kingdom is it located?

That is really cool that there is such a rare flower at AK. I wish I could be there to see it and hope someone posts pictures. I am kind of glad I'm not there though so I don't have to smell it.
