How often does Disney World get bomb threats?

We visited last September about a week after 9/11. As you recall, rumors were everywhere. Just before we left a friend called to tell me that, although Disney World gets bomb threats all the time, they had just received a serious, potentially real bomb threat. She had lived in Orlando and "knew someone that knew someone" that told her about the threat.

I shrugged it off and we went anyway.

Does anyone know often the threats occur and what Disney does about them?

I have no idea about the frequency of such threats, but I'm quite certain that WDW wouldn't report most of them. They are probably semi-frequent, rarely at all serious & most likely handled quickly by WDW security without anyone having a clue. WDW is good at keeping things hushed.

I used to work at an advertising agency and even we would get bomb threats on occasion - so I would think something as large scale as WDW gets them quite frequently.

I've always thought that bomb threats are nothing to worry about - after all, if someone wants to intentionally cause harm, they're really not going to be vocal about it now are they?

Thats where you might be wrong - Everyone knows about the IRA and the differences that they have with the British government. Well, did you know that the IRA have "authorised" code words ? The IRA want to cause chaos with their bombs - not bloodshed. Therefore when a bomb is planted, a phone call from the IRA to a newspaper, radio station or TV company will contain a code word - only known to the police. In turn the media will ring the police. If the code word is authentic then the police will evacuate so that only structural damage is caused (hopefully).
These guys are fighting for a cause (I AM NOT A SYMPATHISER) and bloodshed gives them bad publicity.

Dont know about bomb threats, just that there was one at the community college i was at on 9/11...

But i do know that if the reports of poisoning the water were to happen... all of Fla is screwed. All the water systems are connected by little canals all over the state. :(

I just finished reading ,"Mouse Tales." An unautherized book about DL. It had an entire chapter dedicated to bomb threats, gang fights, and mad punk rockers in the park. I nearly split a gut laughing over the idiotic things people do in the parks. I'd recommend it on your next long flight to WDW.

during one of my trips, many a year ago, there was a bomb threat on the ferry between T&TC and MK. if it hadn't been on the news the morning of the threat, i would've never known about it! Disney got all the proper authorities in, pronto, and found out that it was a fake.

I would expect that disney gets many threats every day

they are a massive target for many different groups

And they might not just be Bomb threats.

And Captain Hook is indeed right about coded warnings

It is in the bombers interest to get people out but cause as much publicity that they managed to blow up an area - but didnt harm anyone.

I guess they have a team or people who are specifically trained in identifying which are true and false and investigativng them with their internal security and plain clothed staff when they receive one.

My aunt went the week after Sep. 11th and she said that something happened and they closed the park down(Magic Kingdom) after they had already opened it. She said the whole park was practically dead anyways though. They wouldn't tell her what happened or anything but I geuss you can't blame them for that. Anyway they gave her and her family free one day park hoppers. I just figured it was a bomb threat though. We never did hear what happened though. There was no info about it on the news and nothing on any websites.
