Bomb Scare Temporarily Closes Cruise Ship Terminal

PORT CANAVERAL, Fla. -- A port terminal for a Disney cruise ship was briefly evacuated Thursday after a bomb-sniffing dog gave an alert while inspecting supplies being loaded aboard.

About 330 passengers were aboard Disney Wonder when the terminal at Port Canaveral was ordered closed at 9:25 a.m., Disney spokeswoman Rena Langley said. Passengers aboard the ship were asked to stay on the 964-foot vessel while those in the terminal were moved to a parking lot.

The Brevard County Sheriff's Officer bomb squad inspected a stack of mattresses on a pallet, and declared the area secure about 80 minutes later.

There was no indication why the dog, part of a private security firm contracted by the Canaveral Port Authority, gave the false positive. Sheriff's Lt. Vic DeSantis speculated that the pallet may once have held something that created the illusion a mattress hid an explosive device.

The Wonder had returned earlier Thursday from a four-day Caribbean cruise. Its next departure, scheduled for later Thursday, was not expected to be delayed.

Thankfully not a real bomb. Has there ever been any other such scares in WDW? I have never heard of any but just wondered. I take it Disney would now have the people to deal with such things on standby?

Wow scary stuff, i am assuming that that happened today, not last thursday, i was just on the Wonder 2 weeks ago. i would have been one of the 330 already on the boat, cause i was number 9 to board (those people in wheelchairs got in first, otherwise i would have been number 1.) not mad or anything, just saying. Still bad stuff.

Bad situation. Never been in anything that bad, but have been through my fair-share of things at WDW, such as rides breaking down, power outages (it takes just a sec. for the back-ups to kick in.) and i just don't panic (but others do) and that's all you can do is make the best of it. If i was on the boat, then i would just keep eating lunch, and exploring the boat, getting the "411" at common grounds etc. There's nothing you can do about it, so just relax, and the officals know what they are doing. Just my opinion.

Uhh...don't dogs use their sense of smell....how can that be wrong?

Sounds like it was completely blown out of proportion. Sounds almost like a routine security check with the new protocols at all of America's Ports. Not all that scary.

Yes I know it's off topic but I was wondering how early you got there to be number 1 (Or 9) in line? I want to be sure I'm one of the first people onto the ship when I go next month, but I don't want to show up at the docks at like 7am if I don't have to get there until 9am. Or I don't want to go at 9am and be like way at the end of the line. When is a good time to go if you want to be one of the first on the ship?
