Bob Iger says "exciting things" coming to Disneyland

This has been mentioned in one of the voluminous threads over on the WDW forum, but since it applies only to Disneyland I figured it deserved a shot here.

Bob Iger has gone on record with the media stating that new attractions, likely Star Wars themed, are coming to Disneyland and they'll be announced this Fall. Here's the quote from a story the Boston Globe is running with this Monday morning...

The hints followed comments by chairman and CEO Robert Iger, who said on a conference call Tuesday that the Burbank, Calif.-based company plans to announce new attractions in Disneyland, the original park in Anaheim opened by the founder of Walt Disney in 1955. Disney acquired ‘‘Star Wars’’ maker Lucasfilm last year for $4.1 billion.

‘‘We’re going to continue to invest in Disneyland,’’ Iger said. ‘‘We’ve got some pretty exciting things that we’ll be announcing over the next couple of months.’’

Aside from my opinion that it was boneheaded of them not to have shown something about this at D23 Expo, what do you think it could be? Iger didn't mention WDW or the overseas parks, just Disneyland.

Miceage has reported in the past week that there's a Star Wars 3D show being cooked up to replace Captain EO, and that Star Tours next door will be updated with new destinations in 2015, in addition to the Speeder Bike coaster being planned for the old PeopleMover track.

But then there's also the rumors of a Monstropolis mini-land being built in the quiet back corner of Hollywood Land in DCA, with a Door Coaster E Ticket as the big anchor of the new Monsters Inc. mini-land. Perhaps that's why Iger used the plural form there, talking about "exciting things" announced "over the next couple of months", which implies there is more than one announcement to be made, or at least more than one attraction to be announced.

I find it baffling they didn't do anything more at D23 Expo than show Star Wars themed wood crates and use a blatant Door theme for the WDI Pavilion pre-show entry segment. Seems like such a wasted opportunity, especially if there are "exciting things we'll be announcing in the next couple of months".

How very odd. o_O

I'm guessing they didn't announce for two reasons. They didn't want to just announce new attractions for Disneyland (if the other parks really aren't getting anything).

Or they are holding back things to announce at D23 Japan in October. If Disneyland and Disneyland Tokyo are getting the same rides, wait and announce in Japan. It's easier to get all the imagineers to Japan to present, then the Hollywood actors who don't work directly for Disney. So we got movie announcements and they will get attractions.

It seems really odd they would not announce anything if they are so close to breaking ground. I know Miceage's last article talked about the money not being approved yet, which is a logical explanation for them not formally announcing anything but you would think Iger could go to the board and ask them to approve it quickly so they could announce something at the Expo.

It would have been easy for them to squeeze the announcements in too without having a P&R presentation. They could announce Star Wars during the live action movie presentation. It would have taken some of the sting out of the we have nothing to say about Episode VII. The door coaster could have been announced during either the animation presentation or the legends ceremony where actors from Monster's were honored. That is assuming of course these are the projects Iger is alluding to.

MiceAge stated they couldn't announce anything because everything that's been proposed for the Disneyland Resort hasn't been greenlit, yet. Seems they've learned their lesson. I know AVATAR Land was greenlit, but nothing was prepared, and nothing still is, it seems.

I'm glad Disneyland resort is continuing to get love...but this years D23 seemed to be one big waste of time. No announcements, no new attractions announced, no real progress on Avatarland, nothing to show in regards to Star Wars VII or Avengers 2...

I'm getting close to giving up on WDW completely if something doesn't change relatively soon.
Guess ill just continue to spend my money at Universal down here and DL in Cali.

Well, they did say as much about Star Wars.
I imagine they'll release more about that at D23 Japan.

Good point. D23 Expo Japan is at Tokyo Disneyland in October. And Iger said they'd announce stuff "in a couple months".

Tokyo Disneyland's Tomorrowland has been in need of an update for a decade, so perhaps the Star Wars Tomorrowland is a joint venture with the Anaheim and Tokyo parks? Hmm....
