Blackbeard Comes Aboard at Disneyland Park and Magic Kingdom Park May 20

While I like the Jack Sparrow AAs, I dislike the Davy Jones projection, and I imagine I won't like this one any better. In my opinion, it just doesn't fit with the rest of the attraction.

Yep, pirates in a pirate attraction.

Recipe for disaster!

Instead of putting him where Davy is why can't they give him back the ship of which he was captain for 38 years. Also' since Michael Sprout is writer expect Blackbeard to refer to himself in the third person frequently.

Ugh, this makes me sick. I thought the best thing to happen to that ride ever, was the Davy Jones injection during the re-imagining. You could take Barbosa and the 3 Jack Sparows out...and it wouldn't bother me. But Davy Jones book ending this ride was amazing. His voice at the end, the footsteps leading into the store...and the vapor wash at the beginning with DJ's projection. all perfection.

Bringing in Blackbeard to replace the projection is like slapping a spoiler on a beat up pontiac grand am and calling it a gto.

Here's why Blackbeard is better than Davy Jones: he looks like an actual pirate.

For people who didn't see or don't remember the pirates movies, Davy Jones looks silly, and they're left thinking, "the hell was that squid guy?" Blackbeard doesn't need a back story. He's a freaky pirate with a classic pirate look and doesn't look out of place to anyone, especially those who aren't familiar with Davy Jones.

I also like the Davy Jones voice at the end of the attraction, but I think this change is for the better based on appearances alone.

It says that Davy Jones will be back, and that's good. I think he looks super cool.

If you're in the boat at just the right time, and he materializes right in front of you, it's quite a start.

I think Blackbeard there is just fine, too.

What I hope for is that later in the year, they'd go to an "every other" projection, where Davy and Blackbeard would swap out.

Assuming, that is, that Blackbeard is a memorable character. Here's hoping!

Those movies were huge blockbusters. Many WDW guests have seen them, and even people who have not seen the movies probably know who he is because Pirates merchandise is so ubiquitous. And even if you don't know who he is, he introduces himself as Davy Jones.

I'm reserving judgment on this change until I've seen On Stranger Tides. We don't know if Blackbeard as represented in the movie is a supernatural character like Davy Jones. Of course, this scene won't make sense if he's not. But he could be, so, until I've seen the movie, I'll give WDI the benefit of the doubt. It certainly has potential to be interesting. I like that Disney is interested in these temporary enhancements, but I'm glad this one will only be temporary because I like Davy Jones and the grotto as it is now.

Did that projection of Davy Jones move at all? I seem to remember it a little later, in an actual waterfall than right at the beginning where it is now.

I don't mind the change. Though I liked the Davy Jones character in the films, there was just something about the projection that didn't fit with the attraction. I guess it's the fact that he was the only "creature" throughout the entire ride, whereas the rest (obviously) are actual pirates. I'm sure I'd feel differently if they had worked other chracters (Flying Dutchman cew) of the 2nd and 3rd films into the ride.

Haha. After all that debate on the other thread about Jim Hill not being trustable and his article was right. That thread took a bad turn almost immediately. It was about an interview McShane did about being added to the ride.

I understand a lot of hardcore preservationists hate the Jack Sparrow AAs but I loved them. Maybe it's because I loves the movies so much. And the majority of the ride was not drastically changed. Honestly I will miss Davey Jones because I think he belongs in a waterfall. And think maybe Black Beard should have gotten his ship back from from Barbossa. But that's a more expensive addition then swapping out the projection.

Glad this ia happening the same weekend as Star Tours so I get to see it. Too bad I won't have had time to see the new film. Hope the projection doesn't spoiler the movie. Lol.

This is another situation where those people that are detractors of using screens in attractions can now see the benefit. It's a much easier transition for something like this. An element of the ride changes overnight, there is definitely value in that.

As one of those "screen detractors" (and it's not all screens, for example the hitchhiking ghost "screens" are terrific), the fact that the screens can be switched from Davy Jones to Blackbeard doesn't really make me feel any better about it. I ask the question that I generally ask whenever something is changed/added to a ride: Why is that there?

Why is that particular projection there? Is it there because for story purposes it makes sense? Or simply because it was cheap to do?

In this instance (as with the Davy Jones original projection), I think the answer is they did it because they could and because it was cheap. I fail to see why, for story purposes, a projection of Blackbeard would just appear randomly on a waterfall. Now, not having seen the movie, maybe that's his "super power" or something, but for now, it just doesn't make sense to me. Is it the end of the world? No, of course not. But when they make changes to classic attractions, I prefer these changes make sense to the story first.
