Black Friday Adventures?

So, did anyone venture out on Black(Thursday and ) Friday? In short, Up 26.5 hours straight, hit 11 stores and scored some good deals. Details below if you want to read them...sorry for the long post, but it is what it is.

I'm a nut, so I did. My day started yesterday when I was in-line at K-Mart a6 about 5:45am. They had a great deal on a game table for my son, so I got up early and went for it even though I really don't like that store. I was about 25th in line to get in, I made my way back to the game area and was the first one there...sweet!!! Look around and they didn't have the item out. Confused, I ask the worker there if they are in a different spot...nope. He checks in back...NONE. Checks on the walkie talkie...None in the store. So they advertise an item, then don't stock it...nice. So they have a kiosk where I can order it on-line. We need it for my son's birthday on December 9th, so it will be shipped to the store by the 6th...cool. Not ideal, but fine. Get home and prep for the holiday.

Fast forward to after dinner and dessert and I head over to Dick's Sporting Goods for their 8pm sale. Got there a little after, so no waiting in line to get in, walk over and find what I am after...excellent. Run in to a neighbor and make the fatal mistake of talking with her for a bit. In that 10 minutes, the line to check out explodes. I am now back a ways and it takes about 45 minutes to weave through that line and check out...DOH!!! As a BF veteran I should know better.

So I head back home to wait until the Game Stop sale at midnight. I leave the house at about 11:30 and get there in a few minutes...line around the building to the back. Never being there and not a gamer, I wasn't aware of the new game system releases which caused the long lines. At that store, the game I wanted wasn't on the sales floor, it was behind the counter at the check out. So I had to wait in the entire check out line, once I got in, to even know if I had my item. I was waiting with these cool folks who helped me pass the time by just chit-chatting with me about whatever. So we weave through the line, I get up there and they had plenty of my game, so I rack up another successful run. It didn't go as quickly as I had hoped, but I wasn't in a rush.

So I now had about 4 hours to kill until my next opening I wanted to be at. I realized I left my phone at home, so I run back to grab that and then I head over to Target and at this point it is pretty empty in there and I was amazed to see most of their listed door busters still sitting on the pallets. I even got Monster's U Blu-Ray/DVD combo for only $10...bonus!! Grab one other thing and move on.

With still time to kill, I head to Kohl's. Same deal with them and their door busters. Most of them were still available, 6 hours after the main rush. I did pick up an item I wanted, so good deal.

Still with time, I ventured to Wal-mart...well after their chaos. Left there with nothing, but again, many door busters were still available. Last stop in this town was at JCP. Nothing really in mind to buy there, but I had time to kill, so why not? Just happen to get there at about 3:45am, so I lucked into one of their free Disney Snow Globes. Find some shirts that would be good for me, but left them for my wife to buy for me. Wander around there and kill a bit more time. Leave without buying anything and head to the next town over for more.

Having some time, I go back to KMart and return something I bought the previous morning. Then over to Home Depot for their opening. Pick up a ladder for me and a huge pack of batteries for us all.
I'm now really starting to feel the effects of being up 24 hours straight. I have one more opening in that town, so I head over to Sports Authority. This town actually has 2 of the same stores because S.A. bought out Sport Mart. I pull up and there isn't anyone in line, so I just stay in the car in the heat. I start to doze off but fight it. At about quarter to, people leave the cars and head to the entrance. They were giving away scratch off cards for at minimum $10 and maximum of $500. Somebody has to get the big one, why not me? At this point it is about 15 degrees out. But it is only about 15 minutes to open, so I'll be fine. Man was it cold out there. Go in get my scratch of and win...$10 off...not the biggie, but better than nothing. Get an item I wanted and decide...I'll head over to the other S.A. in town to try and get another scratch off. Get over and they still had some...sweet. Get it and this time I get...$10. Oh well. So I pick up another item I wanted and get out of there.

Head back to my town for one last stop. Get to Staples at about 7am. They opened at 6am, so nobody really there. I misread the ad and didn't want to deal with a rebate for a spindle of DVD's, so I just pick up this laptop cooling fan and get finally head home. Wife was just waking up, tells me to go to sleep for a while. So i was up for 26.5 hours straight, probably about 30 miles of driving, spent some $$, got some stuff and had a great time doing it. I figure once a year I can be a nut and do this.

Worst part was me getting a wrong number call on my cell phone about 2.5 hours after I fell asleep and then another call on the house phone about 10 minutes later. I couldn't get back to sleep, so I am now a zombie for the rest of the day.

Anyone else with any good stories or crazy things you saw?

An old HS friend was at a Sam's Club early this morning and posted a 4-word message on FB: "I must be nuts."

That's as close as I got to shopping today.

Heh, heh . . . I got a chuckle from your friend's comment. I'm not a fan of the big, box stores or large malls to begin with, so I definitely avoided them.

However, I did go to a local book/gift shop and bought a few presents there. The man and woman who own the shop were so appreciative of the customers who chose to do business with them today, as they were well aware of their major competition. They asked me to pass along to friends that Saturday is Small Business Saturday, and to maybe consider your local stores to support them.

Online. Sales.

Because that is the sane way to do it. And I saved $75 on my new iTouch and full body invisible shield (by Zagg; I highly recommend it for your smaller devices)

We are online shoppers. I just can't take the frenzy. I do have friends that have a Black Friday Club. They check out all the sales ahead of time and split up the stores and head out in pairs to hit all the sales. They each have the groups list for their assigned store This way they can cover more ground.

In between posting here and there I have been diligently doing all my shopping online. I did hit a Walmart late last night as was shocked at how packed the store was, but also most of the "doorbuster" sales were still intact. Throw in the fact every single register was open there really was no wait.

And that's sad if you think about it.

You go to these stores in your regular non-holiday life all the time and wait 20 minutes to check out because they only have one register, usually the cigarette one, open, yet on a holiday when people should be home enjoying their family, they actually have people working.

If you open, they will shop. By the looks of it, next year stores will be open a lot earlier next year. By us at least, the "save thanksgiving" movement was an absolute failure. If you work in retail, I would plan your thanksgiving for the weekend before the actual date next year.
