According to people who have seen Big Thunder Mountain trains taking test runs around the track again, it appears the smokestacks have returned to the front of the engines (for over a year the smokestacks have been missing. Rumor is they had deteriorated and had become a possible safety hazard.)
I was disappointed it took Disney so long to make this repair. But in light of the Disneyland tragedy, its certainly a good thing they removed all the smokestacks, and only reattached them when it could be done properly.
