Big Changes To Fastpass - miceage.com

From Al's Update today, it seems a lot of fastpasses will be dissappearing...
Following here are some of the changes currently approved for FastPass attractions in Anaheim. Read 'em and weep FastPass ticket collectors:

Why aren't they sold on ebay as collectors items?
Visitors fill the tops of the machines with invalid passes.
Pirates of the Caribbean will no longer offer FastPass, effective immediately. In September the marquee will have all references removed, the machines will be removed, and the queue will be restored to its pre-FastPass condition.

The Haunted Mansion will keep its FastPass machines closed for 9 months out of the year. Haunted Mansion will only offer FastPass during the Haunted Mansion Holiday season, and even then there may be slower weekdays when it is not offered.

Winnie The Pooh will have its FastPass operation permanently removed in the fall, and minor queue modifications will be made. It is still undecided whether or not Splash Mountain will move back to its old FastPass distribution area where the Pooh machines currently are.

Big Thunder Mountain will continue to offer FastPass, although it will not offer it on slower weekdays.

Roger Rabbit will continue to offer FastPass as the only FastPass attraction in the northern half of the park, although it will not offer it on slower weekdays.

it's a small world holiday will not offer FastPass again. This Christmas season they will restore the queue they used during 1997-99 before FastPass.

Star Tours will have its FastPass operation permanently removed in the fall.

Autopia will continue to offer FastPass, although it will only be offered on weekends and during busy seasons.

Indiana Jones and Splash Mountain will continue to offer FastPass, although there will be slower weekdays in the off season when it is not offered at either attraction.

Space Mountain and Buzz Lightyear will both open in 2005 with FastPass. They plan to evaluate whether to keep FastPass on Buzz Lightyear later in 2006.

Psst, we'll pay you to ride this turkey!
The lines rarely form for this brand new ride, I guess the word is out about it.

The changes at DCA have primarily taken place already:

The FastPass areas were shuttered at It's Tough to be a Bug and MuppetVision earlier this year, and the machines will be permanently removed this fall.

Who Wants to be a Millionaire - Play It! will have its FastPass removed this fall, and the attraction itself may not last too long into 2005.

All of the other DCA attractions will retain their current FastPass setups, however there will be slower days in the off season when it will not be offered on some or all of those attractions.

Those are some pretty big changes, don't you think? Matt and his executives are fully prepared to receive some fairly nasty complaint letters for a couple of months, but Matt is convinced that this is the right thing to do for the long term good of both parks. Especially at those big E Ticket attractions like Pirates that can consistently cycle through 2,750 riders per hour, it makes sense from just about any angle you look at it.

But it's just one more example of Matt and his hand picked executives being willing to make some tough decisions that will benefit the park and its patrons in the long term.

Overall I have no problem with those changes. The FP on many rides is just a joke (Winnie, Tough to be a Bug, Muppet, etc.)

The only one I disagree with is the IaSW Holiday to have them removed. If they are keeping the HM FP for the holiday, they should keep Small World too, but that is my opinion.

I'm glad that they're starting to get rid of FP where it is not needed, especially at The Many Adventures of Winnie the Pooh, the 3D attractions, and PotC and HM. However, I was hoping that Roger Rabbit would lose its as well---that queue needs to be used.

Since Star Tours will be losing FP in the fall, will they be using those machines for Buzz?

It would make sense to use those for Buzz. The only think I can think is that leaving them in the same spot might create some confusion with people thinking it is for ST.

I'm pleased with these changes. WDW needs to make some similar changes with some of the rides...these are all smart changes, leaving FP only on the rides that actually need it. I think keeping Buzz with it is a good move if it gets lines similar to WDW's ride, which it should. I'm having trouble remember Peter Pan's lines though. It doesn't have FP at DL but it gets 70 minute waits at WDW, easily (and has FP there). What are its waits like at DL? I'm sure the abundance of dark rides in Fantasyland drives it down...

Pan and Mr Toad can both get some pretty heavy lines. They do tend to move fairly fast - I think the rides hover in the 45 min range; but I could be off there. Pinnocchio and Snow White have less people in line.

This is GREAT news. Fastpass isn't needed year round, and worked best (IMHO) when it was only offered on the really busy, headliner attractions. Disney got a little "fast pass crazy" and installed them on a ride like Pirates? The Pirates line moves quickly (or did in pre-fast pass days). The same for the Haunted Mansion. I totally agree with these decisions. I just wish they'd fast pass Peter Pan's Flight, but that may be more work than it's worth since people will wait in line for an hour for it now!

I had the PLEASURE of going to Disneyworld the first year they tried fast pass. It worked out great! It was a slow(er) season (December 2nd-6th) for them and DH (dear husband) and I got on a few headliners with little to no wait, but it also wasn't available on too many attractions.

I always thought it was silly to have fast pass for Who Wants to be a millionare, and though I enjoy competing for a cruise, I will agree that that attraction is slowly outliving it's time frame. Maybe they'll make the questions easier to give away all those cruises? LOL

Wonder if they will have a replacement for Millionaire by the 50th. It doesn't make much sense to spruce up DL so much while DCA has so many trains w/ no music on Screamin and three buildings in Hollywood Pictures Backlot with nothing (Millionaire, Superstar Limo, and Hollywood and Dine--which really needs to start serving food again--the fast food selections at DCA are pretty low)

All-in-all, those changes look very reasonable to me! I'm glad to see they're actually taking a good, critical eye on things like that. The rides that need FP are keeping it, and the ones that don't are losing it. Manangement's learning there are ways to save $$ without gypping people.

I've heard complaints about that, but I must say I've only been on 1 car that didn't have music in all the (hundreds) of times that I've been on it.

On Screamin? Really? You must be very lucky! More often than not, the music is not working these days, and I'm on it weekly. A month or so, it got so bad that only one train out of all 5 out that day had music.

Be prepared for even more changes to Fasspass soon!

FP will be accessed by mag stripe off of your ticket!!!

*comparing your entry ticket to the gate (for all the AP's who cheat the system by using your friends card when they didnt come in) NO GATE/NO FP FOR YOU.

Well, after two days in the park with no Pirates or HM FPs, it seems to be working very well! Not that it was really busy or anything, but no one really seemed to mind, and lines moved quickly.

Thanks for the update Kirsten. Yes, they do seem rather reasonable to me as they FPs appeared at almost every attraction. I was beginning to think they were going to start FastPassing the churro carts! ...no....wait! Not a bad idea. I remember being at DL in a Feb and the park was just sooooooo empty. I got to ride IJA six times in a row with no lines. No FPs needed. Finally Disney does something that makes sense.

That's good to read. I'm really not going to miss the lines bleeding into the walkways.
CherryNegra,
I like your idea for the FastPass for the churro cart. Last year I spent 35 minutes in line at a churro cart...no lie  . I shouldn't complain because no one was forcing me to stay in that line :p .
