Beware the Scammers!!

I had read a thread on this subject about 6 months ago regarding some credit card scamming at WDW resorts in that someone calls your room claiming to be a resort employee checking on a problem with your credit card number, and once you give them the info, they clean out your account.

Well, we just came back from a week in Vegas, and it happened to us. DD19's boyfriend, who is over here from Ireland going to school, got a call in his room from someone who identified themselves as a hotel employee, knew my name, knew his name and that he was traveling with me, and ended up with Chris giving out his debit card number. When Chris called me and told me about it, we called his bank in Ireland right away, and they confirmed that there had been 4 large transactions within 8 mintues on his account, virtually cleaning it out. This could have been a catastrophe; fortunately, his bank noticed the unusual actibity and was able to put a stop on the transactions, so he didn't lose his money, he just has to go a couple weeks without his debit card until a replacement arrives from Ireland.

Just wanted to give all you travelers a heads-up - NEVER give your credit cards number to ANYONE with checking that they are legit.

There are now flyers by the phones in the YC warning you not to give out personal information on a call that you don't initiate.

One thing that I was surprised about, from a security standpoint, was the volume of flyers from outside pizza places slipped under the doors. I can understand this more at the value & moderates because the hallways are on the outside. It bugged me in the YC because it means that random people are blatantly trolling the inner hallways.

There's obviously always a risk, wherever you are. But just remember that you can't let your guard down, even at Disney. Keep your kids in sight at all times, ours used to run ahead on the way to the room and would occasionally turn the corner just ahead of us. Not anymore. Just be safe and aware of your surroundings at all times, especially in this economy.:)

It's very easy to get in the resort and not at all illegal to walk around the inner hallways. They're not closed to the public. You just have to say you are visiting and want to walk around. They'll issue you a temporary parking permit.

The guy who was doing it at WDW would apparently just stand off to the side of the check in desk and listen. They do go through everything with you when you are checking in, and if you are observant it isn't hard to listen in.

Thank you. It's all too easy to blame a Disney CM, but in reality it's all too easy, and common, for people to let their guard down and release this kind of information while relaxing at the pool or eating dinner, simply by having an observant bystander eavesdropping on your conversations.
