Best Point and Shoot

Anyone have any suggestions on the best point and shoot camera? The camera I have isn't a point and shoot, a little bulkier. I would rather have something I could fit in my pocket. But don't want to skimp on quality. Or zoom capability.

What's your budget? It's a bit pricey, but a lot of people love the Sony RX100 (It's on my to be purchased list for my next trip)... A search reveals a couple threads here on the RX100...

The Canon S100/110 is very capable and skinny for pocket use. I have an older S95. Had a G9 before that which was awesome - since it had "pro" features... But totally not so pocketable. The S series has just about as many features without the bulk.

It needs to be small or you just won't take it with you - defeating the purpose.

I like the idea of the rugged cameras; water and drop proof, etc. but that usually comes with the price of bulk.

You should ask this in the Photography section. There is one camera that they all really like. I think it is a Sony and has an X in it, but I could be wrong.

And I'm admitting I could be wrong, so a certain member of the Photog Forum (and he knows who he is!) does not have to point out my FI status!

I'm looking at Leica's point and shoot but it's not cheap either (600 I think on Amazon). I do want one that is better than my smartphone's quality, yet small enough that I will take it with me and use it. I'll have to check out the other forum! :)

The Leica cameras are very nice indeed... #PROTIP Leica P&S cameras are rebranded Panasonics.

I shoot with an M9 though - and there's NOTHING cheap about those. ;)

So its a Panasonic? Are their P and Ss any good?
Yes and no. Hardware wise, totally Panasonic. Leica does do a bit of "tuning" to the firmware; namely the fonts, etc. but also the "look" of the images. Slight cosmetic changes to the bodies. Not a huge difference in the end though. You save a couple hundred bucks going Panasonic. They're nice cameras either way. The software application(s) provided with the cameras is also different.

The exception is the X1/X2 and M cameras. Those are purely Leica.

I just got a Canon Powershot A1300 last week and so far I'm really happy with it. (I'm going to Disney in 4 days and for the past year, I've been using a Panasonic Lumix and I absolutely hated the thing. So I needed to upgrade.)

One thing to keep in mind when buying a point and shoot (or any camera really) is what kind of batteries it takes. One of the main reasons I got this camera is because it takes double AA batteries, and doesn't have it's own special battery that has to be charged every night in my hotel room. I like knowing that I could just buy batteries anywhere. Also, it has an optical viewfinder. I can't stand not having one.

Anyway...just something to consider.

Olympus sz-31mr I love this camera. Its a point and shoot with amazing zoom and shooting modes. For its size and price I don't think you can beat it.
