The Hollywood Reporter says that the direct-to-video sequel Bambi II is racking up impressive sales and handily beating Wallace & Gromit - The Curse of the Were-Rabbit.

Disney's Bambi II generated first-day sales to consumers of nearly 800,000 units in the United States and Canada. That could put the film on track to hit the 2 million-unit mark its first week in stores.

DreamWorks' Oscar-nominated "Wallace & Gromit" had day-one sales of 350,000 units in the United States and Canada, leading to likely first-week sales of just under 1 million units.

I'm surprised Wallace and Gromit are selling so well over there, given just how British the whole film is.

By the way, the DVD won't be released for another ten days over here.

The Bambi sales are all in it's name....Bambi. That will draw a bigger consumer response than Wallace and Gromit.....as they are still pretty well unknown here in the states. What Bambi lacks to Wallace and Gromit is the never ending humor and the amazing ideas that come out of their creators heads. Wallace and Gromit didn't do well in theatres here, but yet....you don't see Madagascar or Chicken Little up for the Academy Award - both of which did pretty well.

Bambi...is a sequel of a film that parents know, so they buy it for their kids over Wallace and Gromit - I've seen both and to be honest....Bambi isn't half as good as W&G.

I see Corpse Bride possibly taking the Oscar tho, the stop motion in that film was fantastic and it was a delight to watch...not as funny as W&G, but still it was a good film.

Bambi II might be selling better, but Wallace and Gromit is the superior film. It is a virtual lock for the best animated feature Oscar.

Wallace and Gromit might be the superior film, but Bambi II is selling better. And that's really what it comes down to. We criticize Disney for the direct to DVD sequels, but I think is a case that gives good reason to why they do it. Still, as people have already mentioned, the reason Bambi II is doing so well is that the original was such a hit (actually it bombed in its first release also, but there were other circumstances at work, but its success over time made up for its early loss--a little sub-point here, quality still wins out in the long run).

I don't mind Disney cashing on direct to video sequels, but if they want to continue that success, they better start nailing their theatrical features again. If the first film was bad, how will anyone expect the sequel to be worth it? Hopefully Pixar talent can fix this. Hopefully...

I have faith :D .

Just purchased Bambi II for my wife for her B-day and the whole family loved it! IMHO it was much better than other Disney sequels to classics!
